I am looking to repower my bass boat with a 115 mercury opti... I need to make a desision on wheather or not to spend the extra money on the Pro XS. All the mercury site says is the difference is the RPM range.

What, if anything, are the differences between these motors for the extra 500 bucks???

the pro x-s has carbon fiber reeds, and a higher psi at the fule rail.

the ECM is programed diffrently to operate at the higher rpm.

thats it.

the pro xs runs closer to the mechanical tolerance of the motors components.

the optimax.stays under said tolerance. that being said the optimax pro xs has the higher failur rate of the two.

if you dont need the extra speed 1 or 2 mph then save your money and let the design of the optimax and lower rpm make your motor last longer. ;) my opinion.

I would think Pro XS will have more value, and failure rate is only more if you plan on running it like a scalded dog all the time.

Like Mini says: "There's only 2 kinds of outboards,.......those that have blown,...and those that will eventually!"

Thanks for the info guys...

Sounds like Im gonna get the Optimax cause I only fish about 4-5 tourneys a year and thats the only time I run it like a "Scalded Dog"

the fuel presure is higher , the rpm's are higher, the speed goes up less than the average person might expect.

so.. it goes to figure the average person might push this a littel trying to get the added speed they think they paid for.

also the added rpms would cause more detonations and failures alone.

and i agree with mini to some extent but you can slow the process by being mindfull

decarbonizing your motor every now and then, keeping it in top condition, not pushing your motor all the time. never over rev dont overtrim.

the never ending quest for more speed will blow up any motor.
