After spending the day plowning through some sand and mud on a shallow lake, I noticed I wore through the paint on the skeg. Has anyone bothered to repaint the lower parts of a motor? if so what should I use ( prime and paint )

Just get black "motor paint" at any boat supply store (Boater's World, West Marine, etc.) It's a spray paint.

Simple.

Don't bother, it's a right of passage! LOL Plus, you'll just take it off again anyway. Whenever you beach your boat in sand it's best to put the motor down and bury the skeg as an anchor. But doing this takes the paint off. No biggie.

If you repaint it, make sure to use zinc chromate primer first, it's made specifically for lower units. It's available at the previously mentioned places too. In the shallow water fishing that I do, I have to repaint all the time......................sa

I learned the hard way that you'll need to sand the surface smooth before you repaint. If the paint is just scuffed, you can apply new paint over the old. But if you've got metal exposed, than I'd apply a coat or two of zinc chromate primer as Steve said.

The nice thing about the Mercury spray can is that the nozzle allows for a very fine, controlled spray. It's very difficult to apply so much paint that it runs and the end-results can match the texture and appearance of the original paint.

is there any harm to leaving it unpainted?

Do they make a paint that is the same color as the unpainted "grey" ??

He simnitro if you paint it the boat will go faster.. really.
