You and I are in the same boat on that subject. I lock everything.

I have a sign on the outside garage door that states:

Robbers and Burglars BEWARE!

It looks as if noone is home.

Is it worth your life to find out!

My garage will light anyone up coming from any direction and within' 30 feet:p

Tox, thats some good advice you put out there. Too bad this stuff has to be a reality.... but its the world we live in now.

Thankfully where i live the crime rate is super low and stuff like this has never been a problem for me. I store my boat at outside at home and i dont worry about it too much. My yard is totally fenced and my dog( a big German Shepherd) is a good deterent. He is really good at making noise when strangers are around. I would never attack someone but if a stranger ever hopped my fence they would see a big dog coming their way barking like crazy and id bet they beat it fast.

For a while now i have only carried 5 or 6 rods and a small tackle bag in the boat at any given time. If i stay at a hotel that stuff comes with me. I do leave my soft plastics that are on the lids but if bet a thief could care less about that stuff. The only other stuff i leave is my "junk" like sandals, towels, hats etc that are always in the boat. One other thing i have done is i rigged my console fishfinder to be easier to get out. Mine is built in the dash but i put it on with wing nuts so i can remove it or reinstall it in literally about a minute so that comes inside too along with the front one.

I could have gone even deeper and discouraged obvious stolen gear from sites like Craigs List, pawn shops, flea markets etc., but there is really no way to tell if someone is just getting rid of their stuff or it is "hot". Besides it is a fine line with GYCB to get into sensitive topics. I was mildly surprised they even printed it. It is very hard to turn down a deal like $200 for an 1197c or a HD8 with side imaging but you really have to question whether or not it is legit. That's the other angle, taking away the profit, but we all know that is not going to happen. I question how much more, if any, flush mounted units are.

Good article. I already do most of what you suggest as I have experienced the "boat ramp caper" in the past. Some POS took my tie-downs and motor toter out of the truck bed while I was on the water. They weren't even the "made for" tie-downs, just ratcheting straps anyone can buy at Walmart. The key word in all of this is "buy". They steal what you "buy".

As the economy sags, and the methamphetamine problem soars, be prepared for more theft occurring. The more desperate folks become, the worse it will get. Sad.:(:(:(

I've read accounts of people going to get their truck to load the boat and coming back to all of their rods/reels gone. Even coming back to the ramp and a trailer being snatched....I read about a very successful tournament angler who was going out at night and hitting boathouses/boats for gear, electronics and props. Thieves who will take a boat out of a slip, tow it out to the middle of the lake and strip it, then just leave it. Man-o-man do I hate a thief!!:angry: Such a sad state of affairs. We even left Mac in the truck to watch the rigs while we went up to visit Neeley in the hospital.

What about some ****** stealing your catalytic converter from your truck?

That would suck.

Yea Tee, those arent cheap. I had some ******* stap the glass form my mirrors last fall when i was at my girlfriends for the weekend. It was on the street for ~1 hour, come out and gone. The freaking glass was over a grand total because of the heat and signals.

Tee, that would suck! The reason that is being done is because those contain platinum. I dint know that until a few years ago. They hit the junk yards pretty hard a few years ago. Now i think most JY cut them off before they stick the vehicle in the yard. Too bad you dint drive off while they were operating.

I think around Dayton here anyway..all the scrapyards have been told by the police to report ANY converters being sold to them. Seems to have helped here.

When living in South Florida I was out in Lox fishing with a good friend and when we got back to the ramp some a.s had stolen the entire winch/transom bracket and lights....as the sign reads this property is protected by "Mr Smith& Mr.Wesson"

Good read Tox! You can't remind folks too often about their security these days. If it can be stolen, it will be stolen. The only question is when. :(
