I was looking at an E-mail ad from Cabela's and noticed this rod. I've wondered for years if they're worth a darn. Looks like a good idea espcecially for windy days but there are a lot of good ideas that ain't worth spit. Looks to me the biggest problem would be threading it. I guess you have to have a special tool. Gadget lover that I am makes me intrigued but I'm not sure. Have any of you ever used one of these?

I personally haven't tried one but knew a lot of people that did when they first came out. Most of them end up junking them. They would ahve trouble with tangles, weeds, grass, etc getting stuck inside and not being able to cast far or cast at all.

I have had one for about 5 yr. It comes with a line threader. It is a OK rod if you use it in "clean"

water. If you use in "dirty" water you have to clean it when you are done fishing at least run water though it to clean it. DON"T let any gunk dry in it , it will be harder to clean it. All in all on a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate it at about a 7. I have two other rods that I use before I use this one ;)

I had a 6'6" medium and a 7' heavy. Loved them while they were clean, but I got stuff on my line, and then it would get inside and dry and you would lose castability. I put mine away and haven't used them in about 3 years.

That's about what I thought...a good idea that doesn't work.

How about those rods that have the guides that start out on the top but twist around the blank to where the tip guide it facing down? Have any of you seen those?

Seems flawed from the get-go to me. Too much surface area friction even when clean. That's what kept me from trying them.

Harpo,

I've used the Innerline rods, with the same results as noted above.

However, the other rods that you speak of - "revolver" style wrapped rods - work fantastic when done correctly. I have a few that I have built over the past couple of years. My earlier ones weren't set up with correct spacing on the wrap portion, and castability suffered. I finally got it right, and they work great. Quite a few people make them, and there is a lot of talk about them on the Bass Fishing Home Page over the past few years. If you go to BFHP, Rods and Reels section, and then do a search on Revolver rods, you will probally find a lot of information. I've "converted" a few rods to that style, and built some from scratch. The ones from scratch normally come out better, as you can get the rod splined correctly from the start. I've also completely stripped a 6'6" MH Pflueger Trion IM-8 blank - cork, handle and all, and restarted from scratch. It's probally my best one so far. If you have something in mind that you want to set up, give me a shout, and I'll see if I have a setup written down for that blank. Do you wrap rods yourself? If not, would you like some help giving it a shot? It's as addictive as building your own tackle, if not more.

All the best,

Glenn
