Can of Worms

Not to open up a can of worms but I am interested in opinions on the purchase of a semi-automatic handgun. There are so many out there to look at. Please provide your thoughts and comments, particularly between a 9mm,40 cal or larger. Main reason for purchase is home protection and possible carry. I have a Ruger Mark III Stainless .22 I use for plinking.
