My brother-in-law got me a gift card to a store called Gander Mountain. I know there is one in Cleveland because that is where he lives. We're driving up there in a few weeks to visit and I want to know what to expect? Is it like a BPS and i'll want to leave the wife/kids at his house and drool for a few hours or is it like a Sports Authority/Academy store where 30minutes would be enough.

Thanks!

I thought they got bought out. Very similar to Cableas.

Michael -

I used to order from their catalog ocassionally years ago before they openned any retail stores. Like Rob says, they are very similar to Cabela's - only their selection is not as wide. I stopped into one of their retail stores about 4 or 5 years ago; I was not impressed with their selection at this level.

Trep, they are like a Cabelas but on a much smaller scale. They run their own line of items just like Cabellas and Bass Pro shops. I like going to them when I'm just not in the mood for the big crowds of the super stores. The newer stores seem a little bigger then the older ones but it won't take the time that a Bass Pro store takes. They do have good stuff though. Enjoy.

Rob/Scott - Thanks, got the gift card in December for Hanukkah. Just checked thier website, looks like thier still in business. Got $25 to spend and wondered if I should just look at the typical bargain stuff or if there was something they were known for that I should look specificaly for.

The Gander Mtn store by my house is very small.........you can spend 20mins in there and see EVERYTHING!! I go there to pick up stuff that BPS doesn't carry,...and usually some ammo or something, when i don't feel like driving all the way to BPS.....they do carry Picasso spinnerbaits though,...i like those! It's no where near the size of the Cabella's in Mich!! It's more like the size of a sports authority. BPS and Cabela's all but wiped out the mom and pop stores around here!! There's a few left, but a trip to Gander Mtn is hardly classified as an "event"...LOL

Mac - "ammo"?? isn't that what every lure, worm, plug in your tacklebox is ??? LOL

Unfortunately, in Western PA, Gander Mountain is all we got. I have been in the BPS in Detroit, and GM is about 1/2 the size. Of course, I am sure you won't have any problem spending the $$!

Good point Trep,....there's deffientely Bass Ammo,...and Varmint ammo...LOL I get 99.9% of my Bass Ammo at BPS,............and the Varmint ammo comes from the place with the best sale price at the time of "need"...ahaahahha....sorry for the confusion!

Rich - Like every other fisherperson - i've NEVER had a problem spending the $$, it's like going to Vegas except you take HOME cool STUFF!

Mac -Had to throw that ammo your way as I don't hunt! except them basses, you know they LOVE the sparkles!

There is a new Gander Mtn store that opened in Elyria/Sheffield area which is about 30 miles west of Cleveland (Cobblestone Center). I find their prices are generally a bit high compared to BPS or Wallyworld.
