Fairly old 40# thrust Motor Guide has worked pretty well but has developed a slight glitch, namely, the foot pedal control will not always activate the motor when the direction is straight ahead, i.e., you have to turn the direction to one side or the other, start the motor by pressing the pedal and then change the direction. Does this sound like a fairly simply problem. Don't really want to tear down the motor or foot pedal wiring.

Actually, the "head" is a fairly simple mechanism. At least the mechanical part. I would do some disassembly and see if you cn "see" a glitch of some kind in the operation.

Could be a broken wire or connection in the foot controller or the lower unit. When it fails to work press the button with your hand and try moving the wires in the controller. If it starts you'll know it's probably there. If its in the motor, that would be a little more difficult to deal with but, not impossible. Good luck.
