How to check for year a Merc. motor is made?

I can't remember if there is a plate or anything under the cowl of a 1970's-1990's Mercury motor that would tell you the year it was made:unsure:. I'm looking for a used boat and wondered if anyone can tell me where to find it or how to get it from the serial #?

Mercury had a few years when they did not differentiate model years, as they do now. If you provide a serial number, we can get you "close". From roughly 1986-2009 you can see the model year on the serial tag.
