I spent the whole weekend in the woods and saw only tons of red squirrels, a few snowshoes and dozens of grouse (good for Jim this weekend). But not so much as a doe. What gives???? Out there freezing my butt off, totally descented, 20 feet up and camo covered, sitting over 8 recent rubs and in sight of 6 scrapes, there is obviously a buck patrolling the area, but I didn't see him. 3rd time I hunted there too, mornings, evenings, nothing! And for you bear hunters, here's a question. There are a lot of bears around here, but my knowledge on them is scattered. Exactly WHEN do they go into hybernation. We now have nearly a foot of snow on the ground, would they still be out? BTW Jim, if you read this, last night at dark from my stand, all I could hear was dozens of grouse around me going on the roost. It was awesome. Plus at another spot, I must have had 6 or 7 flushes that flew right broadside in front of me. Some would have made for easy doubles. Of course ONLY when I have a rifle right? They'll be there this weekend for you. So WHAT am I doing wrong?

Have you tried a jig-n-pig? I hear that works good up there. After all, Ken takes a rod/reel out bow hunting!

Just couldn't resist!

I tried a jig n carrot, but they kept breaking me off. There's a lot of thick cover out there in the woods ya know. Them deer will wrap you around a maple tree so fast! LOL And I looked everywhere, but nobody carries 180lb test and 12 ft XXH rods with surf reels. At least not around here.

Yeah I would think the bears should be in hibernation already. I shot a nice buck last weekend, at least nice for down here. I would like to get up there to do some big buck hunting...................sa

Hang in there BigDog,.....we call it "Hunting" for the same reasons we call it "Fishing" and not "Catching"....LOL

I got a nice 3pt buck this weekend too....8" spikes with a little 2" point on one of the spikes......it'll be a GOOOOOD eater too.....1.5yrs old....150lbs....nice deer!!

We saw scrapes all over the place too and I got the only buck,...and that deer wasn't making all those scrapes either!! They were in a completely different area of the property!!....Good things come to those that wait!! You're guide,...you know what it's like...some days ya get'em...A LOT of days ya don't!! That's the way it is!!!

Good Huntin'!!...and be safe!!

I just put my buck picture in my library. I'm not trying to rub it in Rob, I promise.

Dang!!! That's the ugliest buck I've ever seen. Looks like sombody already skinned him!! BTW, sittin on my deck havin coffee this weekend, 5 deer wander through and there's an 8 pt. buck just hangin around em. My house is a huge tree stand LOL, I'm 78 feet up the side of a cliff.

I took a 6 point saturday morning around 8:30. We had a couple piles out with apples and carrots. The deer were not interested in apples at all, but killed the carrots.

Hey Rob not to rub in some more rub ins but last weekend both my dogs were on point next to a mondo huge scrape in the middle of some sumac bushes. While I was stomping around try to flush my quail I happened to turn around and stared right into the face of a huge buck about ten feet from my face. Apparently he didn't appreciated me stomping in his bedroom. He didn't give an inch so I backed out and left.

My newphew shot a buck Friday that scored about 149 and was over two hundred pounds hanging dressed in the shed. I'll see if he took pictures and send you some if he did.

All the deer around here are eating waste corn in the fields and look like fat cattle.

But the down side of where I live is..... I have NEVER seen a four pound smallmouth except mounted or in an aquarium. I haven't caught a bass over five pounds in ten years. Last year I coundn't put enough crappies together to make a feed for my wife and I. Our little one to two hundred acre man made lakes are so busy with tournaments on the weekends you have to take a number to fish a piece of structure. If you can find a place to park your rig.

So when you freezing your A$$ off in the tree have some warm thoughts about all the hawgs you ripped last fishing season(I have visited your library). That ought to make you smile. What I would give to have that kind of water.

fatrap.

I had the same kind of season last year. Only saw one deer but it was my 9 pointer that now hangs above the fire place. It makes it worth it, but it would still be nice to at least have some does to watch or something. I am in all the right places but having a tough time figuring this bad boy out. He's all over the place. While I was driving in on Saturday morning, I saw a nice 4-6 point walking into the woods about 500 yards from where I was to park. A lesser man would have stopped and shot him from the truck with a spot light, but I despise poachers. I hope that integrity comes back to reward me with a big monster next weekend. Thanks for the perspective fatrap. Anytime you want to come up next season, give me a shout.

Sure would like to.

Hey Rob try a jig and rotten bannana and use some of that lead core line. If you've got bear in the area I'm sure you could hook up. As for the deer hunting I hit a small buck Saturday morning, atleast I think it was the buck. A buck and doe travelling together at a full out run, side by side across a beaver flow. Picked a spot thru the trees and when brown hit my scope I let fly. Problem was I found two blood trails going in different directions. Could not find either one. We spent 4 hrs., five of us, and covered a lot of ground but no luck. I just can't figure it out. Found what looked like lung tissue on one tree that the deer crashed into. It just shouldn't have gone that far. I'm sure some coyote is eating it's early thanksgiving dinner now. Oh ya, stood under this one tree Sunday afternoon as my brother made a drive to us, this partridge sat right on a limb right above my head and kept dropping seeds on me.

Talk about a bad day!!!!!
