I sent a message about those trolling motor mounting nuts to Tracker Marine yesterday. Gerald Cox e-mailed me back this morning (great response time, by the way).

Just in case you ever have to have one or more of these things replaced, here is what Gerald told me:

"Mark, The nuts you are referring to are called Jack Nuts and must be installed with a special tool. I would suggest you contact your dealer for proper removal or reinstallization.

For a moment, I envisioned a bunch of Jacks all over the world wondering what that special tool must look like, and why only a boat dealer would have one!

You mean you've never heard of a Jacknut-removal-tool-thingimajigger-doohickey???

Some friends of mine got a puppy named Jack. One day when Jack was a bit older and bigger, they put him in their car and drove off. The next day they brought him home, but his bark was a little bit higher.

Did they take him to the Tracker dealership? Did someone use a Jacknut-removal-tool-thingimajigger-doohickey on him?

I don't know.

Ken, et al...

The Jacknut removal tool is called a drill...The installation tool is really a fancied up screw driver...They work like those drywall anchors..the ones that squish up behind the wall...The jacknuts just work like pop rivets instead...We used to use lots of them on custom computer console boards when mounting them in custom military hardened boxes...Probably paid $2800.00 each through normal procurement channels..LOL

Thanx Greg....I knew a guy named Jack once...nah, I won't go there.

If the dog had been a Jack Terrier (like Fruitcake!), then it could have been covered under a breeder warranty. But then again, you can never tell when damage done is from owner negligence or misuse.

And those with bigger, faster, sparklier and more expensive dogs would just point at Jack and say, "See, I TOLD you that them Jack Terrier's was crappy dogs. A friend of a cousin of my sister's best friend's neighbor had one and i heard that his had stress cracks . . . I mean . . . uh, . . . a rotted hind end. Never buy one of them Jack Terriers, especially from a Jack Terrier breeder. Thems breeders are dishonest as they come."

No, my friends paid for their "repair" in cash, and Jack paid for it the rest of his life. Poor Jack. Poor, poor Jack.

But you need a left handed crescent wrench to install them!

No Rob the new ones are right hand thread...But you do need a metric crescent wrench...new style
