I'm sittin in my Great Room which is built out over a cliff and I look down and see a visitor to my lower deck. Now I have been dispatching many a squirrel since I have been home and maybe he was just cleaning up after me. I used to have a den of fox that would do that job and the male would actually come up to my back door if I had not "fed" him for a time. I like living in the forest but normally these guys won't come around unless there is a drought. Sorry about the crappy picture but I grabbed the closest cell phone before the dog tried to go through the window to get him and he walked off into the forest. I might think twice before I go down to mow!!

Looks like a 1-2 year old to me. I'm not taking the trash out until tomorrow morning!!

Mmmmmm.... Bear stew....:p. As Troy from Swamp People would say... "Choot it!!!"

I don't play with those things. A buddy tried to get me to go bear hunting with him. Naw! I'll pass on that!

All the best,

Glenn

Last time I went bear hunting, I had one come in behind me,..he was STANDING on his hind legs eating berries off of a bush 3-4ft BEHIND me....I was sitting in a ground blind! He was closer to me than he is now, to that support beam from the deck going into the ground! Awesome experience!! Those dudes are as quiet as cats!! He made absolutely ZEEERRO noise walking in.....I didn't hear him until I heard a twig snap while he was eating! There's nothing better than a adrenalin rush at dark,...in the rain...700 miles from home! ;)

Did you watch him long enough to find out if he .... ;)?

I thought of you telling that story when I put up the pic:lol::lol: You got a free pair of camo tightie whities!! Honestly, I don't know what brought him in to my area. There are about 20 deer that use my tract of land as a camping spot and I have a lot of nut bearing trees as a matter of fact, he is right under both a Hickory and a Beech in the pic and Oaks nearby. BUT....I am far from living in the sticks. I've got some pretty rattled neighbors. He's not getting into the trash as far as I can tell and I know no one is feeding him. I can't figure out why he would be here. He was getting ready to come up to the back door when my dog slammed into it at about mach 3. I looked at the dog and thought, man that bear would tear you a new behind!! He was ready to go though. I guess he was feeling brave since he chased a UPS driver back to and into his truck:lol:

Mama probably kicked him out during the mating season in June and now he's out lookin' for new territory. You live close enough to Shenandoah NP to get these guys coming through. They had to put a mobile lighted "Bear Crossing" on Rt. 340 just down from me and near Harpers Ferry, WV because a bear or bears kept crossing back and forth across one little stretch of road this past spring. I don't know what was drawing them there. They had a sow and cub swimming in some lady's pool during the hottest days this summer near Hedgesville, WV. Imagine trotting out in your speedo and finding that in your pool!

I always remember what Rob said about hunting them: Fun to stalk, fun to shoot but then you have to drag the equivalent of a trash bag filled with jello out of the forest. That's NOT fun!!

You can bet I'll be on the lookout a little more now that I know he is out there. Up til now the worst we have had to deal with are Copperheads and Skunks.

No worries Tox,.........he was just passin' thru!! I'd be willing to bet you a bag of my favorite yammie grubs that you will never see him or another one this year!! Maybe not at all...he was just trollin' the hood on his way thru to the next REMOTE spot of woods he can find! He won't be hanging out in a yard with a dog anyway......he won't be within 10 miles of a dog's arss if he can help it!!;)

My next door neighbor told me once that he saw a doe walking down the middle of the street infront on my house several years ago,.......i've been there 17 yrs now and have NEVER seen another one in my street!!

Mac,

I wouldn't bet the farm on him not coming around where a dog is. When I lived in Alaska the berry crop failed one summer and bears were coming down into Anchorage. My neighbor had a Red Husky and a large black bear would come down and eat his dog food every evening. One night the neighbor was late getting home and the dog was still tied out back. Suffice to say the bear added meat to his dog food supper that evening. The DNR finally had to shoot it after they had tranquilized it once and relocated it, but it kept coming back.

All I know is that it's not "normal" for them to be in my neighborhood. They have shown up during a drought and raid bird feeders. We are not having a drought.....There is no shortage of food in the "remote" areas either:unsure: Looking at the pic, I hope he doesn't think he is gonna den under my deck!!:lol::lol: For all I know, they do travel through my property and I just don't see them. If I see him again, I'll put in a call to DNR and see what can be done. Guess I better quit baiting him with dead tree rats!! I know the people 2 houses down used to put out garbage piles to feed the crows...don't ask... but I think I remember an article in the local paper last week where this bear has been hanging around town. I think they tried to dart him and couldn't get close enough to get a shot. Heck, they can come sit on my deck and put a feather dart in his azz!!:p

Wow Toxic that's pretty amazing. We live in the city but have seen an exceptional amount of critters this year with the dry weather.

Well, he or she has been sighted a couple more times since I first posted this. Once in my neighborhood and once in the next neighborhood over from us. If I see him at my place 1 more time, I am going to put in a call to DNR and see if we can't get a barrel trap or something out here. This is not the place for a bear to be, I'm a live and let live guy but too many kids/pets for him to hang around.
