I just read an article about someone returning to the ramp after a long day fishing to find that their trailer was stolen. This got me to thinking. "what would I do in this situation". Everyone I know who owns a boat trailer, has a boat on it. I guess I would tie up to a lakeside house and punt.

just a topic for thought?

I lock mine on, kind of a peace at mind while towing and while out on the lake. But the bad thing is, the only way to stop a theft, is a well place round!!!!!!

I lock the drawbar in the hitch and the trailer coupler. Only takes a bolt cutter to remove the trailer from the hitch. I had a camping trailer stolen a few years ago, all it took was bolt cutters to get the lock off of the coupler. Now I use the kind of lock that goes in the ball cavity on the coupler when my boat/trailer and utility trailer are not in use.

I also inturn lock my hitch. This topic was more of a "what if" question. How would I extract my boat from the water if the trailer was missing. I've heard stories of thiefs using battery powered reciprocating saws to cut through metal.

A friend of mine came in after a day out on the river. He found that someone was nice enough to run into his trailer, and darned near bend it in half for him. Wasnt that nice !? He was able to make some calls to local marinas and/or boat dealers in the area and made arrangements to have the boat pulled out of the water, luckily. He called his insurance company and they took care of the rest.

Now almost 4 years later, we still dont know how/what happened .............??????

I too lock my hitch into my reciever and my trailer to the ball (both are through pins). The pin type help SOME because they are more difficult to cut (material and space to get a cutting tool into). Hopefully that helps me by a thief looking for an easier target? That said, any trailer can be taken by a determined thief.

I also try to park the trailer where the most traffic goes by (vehicles and pedestrians).

The only other thing I can think of would be to hide a motion sensor alarm on it somewhere. The type that you can hang on the inside of a doorknob. Maybe they won't see it and if it goes off they'll run?

Whenever possible, I endure the hassle of backing my truck/trailer into a stall. Makes it tough to get the trailer past the truck if someone is parked on either side (where the stall is "open" on only one end. They also sell a locking device like a Denver Boot.

We had a rash of trailer thefts on the south end of Lanier several years back where the thiefs unbolted or cut the couplers off the trailers. They were just left hanging hooked to the ball and the trailer gone. That just confirmed to me that if they want it bad enough they're going to get it. Marinas and high traffic ramps are the safest bets for launching any more. :(
