Just wondering what all you NX882 owners tow with.I'm upgrading from a 700 LX to the NX882 and towing with a 4.0 litre Jeep.It handled the 17' 700 ok but I'm sure the 882 with a 175 Optimax is at least 1500 lbs heavier.Dont know if I shuold look into adding an additional trans cooler.

If you have to think about it, get it.......

Long thread on this and other things you should consider when towing a heavier boat.

What kind of hitch to you have? If it is mounted on the bumper, get a new class III too.

Mini

1997 Jeep Cherokee, 4.0, automatic, 103,000 miles. No transmission cooler. Pulls my 1994 Nitro 200/200 Merc just fine as you please! In overdrive!

Prevously had a 1992 Jeep Cherokee, 4.0, automatic that I put 231,00 miles on. No transmission cooler. Towed a 1995 Nitro 180/115 Merc from St. Louis to Florida on several ocassions as well as all over Missouri without a hiccup! In overdrive!

All that said..... A transmission cooler is still VERY CHEAP INSURANCE.

I pull my 901 with my 99 Jeep Cherokee, 4.0 Liter...(the real one, not that grande thingy)...

Never a problem, rarely even know it is back there.

2 suggestions:

1. Make sure you have brakes on the trailer.

2. You will probably need some form of "helper" spring/support. Dig thru the archives and you will see the ones I bought. They make a huge difference.

Enjoy the boat!

Get the trans cooler if you dont already have one. What kind of jeep is it? is it a wrangler or a cherokee? i would think a wrangler might not be the best tow vehicle because of the extremely short wheelbase. the 4.0 will have the power to get it done but really short wheelbase vehicles and towing really dont belong together. I tow my 882 with a Dodge Dakota quad cab with a 4.7 v8. I really dont know its back there no matter where i tow to. Before i got that truck i towed with a gmc sonoma with a 4.3 v6 and it did a fine job with my 882. I spend alot of time on winni and in that area and you know how many hills there are on the way there.

If it is a wrangelr like jim siad that short wheel base will make it a little unsafe to tow.

Not to get off the subject I posted last week about if I should get a trans cooler on my Dakota Quad Cab 4.7 V8. I am pulling a Pro Deep V 16 SC with a merc 75 2 Stroke. I thought it would be a good idea, but it turns out it is not very cheap insurance for me. Called the dealer where I bought the truck and got a quote of $375 for the trans cooler, the kit comes with a HD radiator and the book says 4 hrs. labor at $90 an hour. Not cheap insurance if you as me!!! Going to really have to think about this one. Thats a lot of fishing equipment!!!!!!!!

Paul

Paul you can get an aftermarket cooler for your truck from any autozone or similar store for around 50 bucks. its just a cooler for the tranny. it should take a hour to install and if your handy you can do it yourself. what the dealer is trying to sell you sounds like a upgrade to the dodge maximum engine cooling package. i have that on my dakota and it comes with a bigger radaitor and tranny cooler and a extra fan. my truck runs nice and cool on the hottest of days with that setup.

I pull my 882 with an Optimax with a Ford F150 with 4.6L V8. No problems whatsoever. Just remember to switch your Overdrive OFF if you have it. Your RPM's will be higher but your Tranny will run much cooler! Enjoy your new boat. P.S. I also have a Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 and it also pulls the 882 as if it weren't even there. Your Jeep will probably be fine.
