"Fishing is not a harmless past time like Lawn Bowling"

What if the lawn is like mine and filled with ants and grubs? I could spear a crub with a lawn dart...LOL

I've heard of PETA but never paid much attention. This link is the first thing of theirs that I have ever read. I'd give you my opinion slsail but Rich doesn't permit that kind of language on this forum.

You have GOT to be kidding me.........

is this for real?

I do understand about "fishing waste", and have to admit, I may be a bit overboard about not littering, no waste OR fishing line is left behind when we're out.

I'm stunned, hey, free speech is fine, but the day they try to take a fishin' pole outta my hand, or get in my face about it, then we got a problem....or I should say, THEY got a problem.... ok, I've calmed down....... sorry

We've all seen litter around the shore lines...worm containers, beer cans, cigarette packs, lure packages, wads of line, etc... I for can't stand litter and I always do my part to clean up after myself and others but to say fishing is cruel and evil is just insane. UUUGGGH!!! Now I'm all worked up and I can feel myself turning red.

Litter has nothing to do with fishing! I simply has to do rude people that don't give a crap or have any respect for anything. I once got into with a guy that said "Litter creates jobs for people. Our tax dollars will pay someone to clean that up." Idiot!!!

read the bottom of the page in the link about the radio commercials and BASS classic

Well I always knew the PETA movement was a little left of center, but this is ridiculous. These people are nuts.

Did you listen to Jay's actual commercial? Wow... Mr. Excitement!!! Break out the banjo and start squealin' like a pig... He is a proud PETA employee. And he is dadgummed durn proud of it too! When PETA comes up with these stupid campaigns, can't they think of a more exciting alternative to the event-of-the-day they are trying to stop? I mean, COME ON!!! Breaking a fishing rod in two? Smashing your reel with a croquet mallet? What's really funny is Jay gives alternatives to fishing and mentions BADMINTON as one of them. Don't you hit a BIRDY in Badminton? "Guessin' Jay didn't know 'bout them thar poor birdies gittin' hit by a big ol' racket neither.." PETA gets my big DUH award of the century.

I'm getting so used to these guys and their ridiculous rhetoric that it is just funny now. They have gone so far off of the deep end that they have lost a major amount of credibility. Now we do need to watch them to make sure they don't sneak some legislation through tied to some appropriations bill or something like that. Kudos for picking up the trash but bustin rods? C'mon, donate them to inner city kids so that your picking up fishing trash rather than crack vials and needles....IMHO.

lol, I'm glad to be Canadian, I would imagine we also have a PETA or members of PETA in Canada but i've never met any.

What a load of crap, blaming all fisher men(fisher women) for the stupid ones who leave that crap behind!

Why don't they ban driving on the highways then nobody could litter beside the interstate, or ban walking down the street, lol could go on and on.

"Put down your fishing rod and take a hike" WAIT what about those POOR DEFENSELESS Worms, Ants, and BUGS you're NEEDLESSLY killing by walking on them!

Man, you know if we had world peace, no unemployment, no homeless people then MAYBE then i'd sorta figure with NOTHING ELSE to do these folks might come up with the CR#P, but come on now!

Unfortunately PETA can not be laughed at or ignored. These people are terrorists in every sense of the word. Maybe not as bad as those from 9/11 but terrorists never the less. Their tactics are just the same going after kids in schools is a prime example . Before I became a chemist I worked as a High school Biology Teacher for 4 years I can

Not a rant at all Tom, and you'll find that virtually everyone will agree with you. That's why I said to keep our eyes on them. I don't think as a group we are divided at all on our opinions of these folks. They are the extreme that gives true ecology sensitive people (for lack of a better term) a bad name. They just don't know when to quit. Fisheries management, habitat destruction, water quality, over harvest, catch and release, trash, and on and on are very important issues that need to be addressed and monitored but once the extreme element gets involved it turns into an all or nothing or an us vs. you debate. Simply by the fact that we fish, we are all bonded together like it or not and if a call to arms is necessary, I'm sure we will be there.

TOXIC

I can't even bring myself to go read the PETA page. I just know it will put an ugly edge on my attitude today.

They are eco-terrorists, radical quasi-religious nuts, and anti-humanity advocates. Pure and simple. Their end justfies their means. They worship Mother Nature as a god/goddess. And they see the rest of us non-PETA humans as the root cause of all that is wrong with the environment and Mother Nature.

I can take away some of their ammunition by making sure I clean up after myself and by being an advocate for clean water, clean shorelines, clean recreational areas and proper fish management. I can do my best to be a fair sportsman when it comes to how I hunt and fish. I can use sharper hooks (tipped with Novocain???).

But a person who chooses to belong to PETA has a few screws loose upstairs.

Message to PETA - how many animal lives taken per day that were hit by automobiles in the U.S., counting rats, cats, dogs, squirrels, cows, deers, muskrats, moles, turtles, amarillos, and list goes on. Most people cared? Not really, they either just keep on going or get pissed at the carcass for the damages. Millions of cows and chicken bled to death to serve us with meats. Thousands of tons of shrimp, crabs, lobsters, and fishes were taken out of their habitat to sell for food (commerical fishers has killed a lot more than all of us fishers combined maybe by ten fold). What did PETA do about it? Maybe some, and what can they do - nothing! Heck, they probably had to eat and has killed a couple of the animals on the road.

Hunters and fishers did a lot better, in fact, they took a lot less and put a lot more into the economy. Most of them are aware of the limits and respected it with heart. What PETA should do instead of telling us to take a HIKE, they should think twice to educate people how to handle the catch, how to keep the envirnoment clean, and what to do if you hit the animal - at least provide tips to reduce the mortality rate and overall abuse to the animals without affecting both pleasure and economy.

That's my thoughts that the PETA should be doing, otherwise I think they're downright idiots.

- matt

MOFish, I think you hit the nail on the head. These people are a couple cans short of a six-pack. They shouldn't be allowed to breed.

We're talking about an animal that eats stuff like crayfish! You can't tell me that swallowing a crayfish or crawdad whole doesn't scratch and poke at your gullet. PETA should tell those pesky mudbugs to get rid of their claws so they don't cause fish pain when the fish swallows them!

What about the dorsal spines on bluegill? Now that's GOTTA hurt!!!

Well, I tried to avoid this post, but here goes. Tom, many will find it refreshing that I whole heartedly agree with you. It is unfortunate but true that PETA is all too well funded and has been slowly but surely proceeding with an underground movement in our schools and our media. They have the right to protest, in fact I encourage it, because, they are their own worst enemy. When any intelligent adult that is undecided where they stand see's an actual PETA protest and the absurdity of it, they are usually turned off and put PETA in that little mental box where it belongs with other useless crap. What PETA does NOT have the right to do is harass anglers or hunters in any way shape or form. Legislation was passed protecting the rights of sportsmen and women everywhere. If you are harrassed, you need to turn these idiots in and see to it that they are sentenced to the fullest extent of the law. Tom is right that they are today's form of domestic overt terrorists. Orginazations like this and the Brady campaign threaten our heritage and way of life. They won't be happy until their agenda is realized and I won't go into what that is now, but it's scary. If you do nothing you are as good as on their side. You must speak up, you must put these lunatics in their place and educate the public, especially young people as to what happens if we don't hunt of fish. NO money to fund state programs. How much has PETA contributed? $0.00. Overpopulation and starvation of overcrowded animals. I know I'm preaching to the choir, but we really need to be up in arms about these people. What I can tell you is this, if another protester follows me into the woods.......please make all bail money checks payable to Michelle LaMoy in P'burgh NY! LOL

Great post, Rob, and all of you......... so now I know what they (PETA) are all about, and if it's possible, I got even more upset.......I don't hunt, but I'll defend forever the right of those of you that enjoy hunting, to do so....... and to borrow a phrase from gun people, they can have my fishin' rods when they pry them from my cold, dead, fingers.... sorry to get all worked up y'all, but this thing struck a nerve....egMike

It strikes a nerve in all of us, but be that as it may, what makes this country great is the right to speake and make known your beliefs and feelings without fear of imprisonment or harm. That right is terminated though when you interfere with other individuals rights or try to force your beliefs and feelings onto somebody else. Then you become a dictator. So, lets back their butts up and send them to a country ruled by a dictator. I'm sure Saddam would have some kind words for them. BANG

An Update, just heard on the radio that PETA is going to protest outside city hall today in Chicago, because Ringling Bros. circus is coming to town, unfair treatment of animals or something.

They really are not very smart people to be brutally honest. They are sceduling ANOTHER classic protest? They went once and got the reception they deserved. Think about it, you want to protest at a championship where every person, literally tens of thousands is a huge fishing enthusiast, and you want to go there to protest. Exactly what were they expecting. They got ran out more or less. So the rational thing to do???? Schedule another???? Like I said, PETA is their own worst enemy. Be careful if they get too close though, you might get "stupid" all over you.

LOL Rob, I'll keep that in mind, but if you ask my wife I'm sure she'd say it's too late for that.... I read a post earlier (may have been yours) that mentioned Levi's being a supporter of peta, well, I never thought I'd be saying this, being a lifelong Levi's jeans wearer, but if it's true........ after sending Levi's a letter or email explaining why, I'll not use their products until they stop supporting peta........ egMike---p.s.- sorry Rob, wasn't your post about Levi's..... was Mac's
