How many of you guys have been affected by the BASS desision to throw out the the TBF reprisenitives?

Here in MA, our federation has voted to no longer be part of BASS. they have decided to follow the TBF. it seems to me that there will not be any changes at my level. i will still have a chance to fish the federation tournys and fish the state fish off late this year.

the only thing that will be gone is the chance to move on if i were lucky enough to finish in the top 3.

do you all have any insite to what has gone on, what are your thoughts?

P.S. HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!!

Here's NYSBCF's current status.

This is an update of conference calls and personal conversations that I have had over the past several weeks with both BASS and TBF. I will continue to give you updates throughout the week of the National tournament if I am able to get online.

BASS - Bass has initiated conference calls with the presidents, youth directors, and conservation directors of each state federation. These calls were intended to promote their position and answer any questions that were raised. The information that was shared during these conference calls was no different than the information that has been made publicly available by BASS. They have admitted that the approach that BASS took in the controversy could have been a bit more professional but they are still stating that they did the right thing by pulling the memberships of the state representatives. Subsequent to those meetings, there have been a couple of state presidents that have also been banned from BASS due to activities in their individual states. In those instances, it is my understanding that BASS has temporarily appointed interim presidents to represent those federations. There is information coming out of BASS (during these conference calls) that leads me to believe that if a state decides to not re-affiliate with BASS, there will be an attempt to dictate where the existing money belonging to the federation should go. For example, what I heard is that BASS's position is that any money remaining in the federation accounts at the point in time when the decision is made to not re-affiliate with BASS belongs to the affiliated federation (which they will help to form in your state). This is going to come down to an interesting debate around the money in my opinion.

I also talked with the tournament director who would be running our Divisional tournament (in NY - September 2006) this coming year. He was very clear that regardless of the affiliation choices that each state makes, there will continue to be a BASS affiliated federation in each state going forward. This was a very strong statement about BASS's intent should states decide to leave.

TBF - TBF initiated a conference call with all state presidents earlier this month to answer questions and discuss the possibilities that have been noted on various web sites. During this conversation (Ted and I participated), TBF made it very clear that a decision must be made by each state about affiliation choice prior to leaving the National event in January. During this conversation, I in turn let them know that New York State was not prepared to make a decision of that magnitude until January 22. They also announced that a business plan had been shared with the state federation presidents, but I have not yet received a copy. There are meetings scheduled January 7 & 8 with TBF to which BASS has been invited and say they will attend. At that meeting, we are to receive the TBF business plan (what services they plan to deliver, when, how, etc.) as well as a full set of financial information for this organization. After this conference call, I had a private call with our representative to address some very specific questions that I had. They were - why the pressure to decide by 1/14. This felt to me like the pressure that BASS was also trying to exert so that people didn't have time to make informed decisions. The answer from our local representative was that many states have been very involved in this process for the past several months and had all the information that they needed to make a decision. The given reason for the urgency was the need to secure insurance for the states. I personally don't see what difference one week would make and they have agreed that NY could make a decision the following weekend. That being said, the current set of decisions is that 29 states have already decided to dis-affiliate with BASS and go with TBF. Our representative also said that<

As you can see ESPN/BASS are trying to force the issue along with the TBf. Inc. It leaves manyof us in a bind not knowing which way to turn. So, myself I've taken a wait and see attitude to see how this all turns out. If it's not solved by the time fishing season starts here in N.Y.S. then I'll fish other tournament trails not affiliated with either.:(:(

I don't pretend to understand everything that has gone on, all I know is in Texas nothing to my knowledge has changed. Our first tournament is in 3 weeks.

I am doing the same thing BF. I have been a BASS member for 20 years and a federation member for 10. I have even renewed my BASS membership yet....

The PA. federation has voted to stay with the TBF. Not surprising as our state president was one of the 7 who had their B.A.S.S. memberships revoked. That being said, we had only one option if we wanted to have a federation fishing venu for 2006. (because if your club decided not to stay with the TBF then you would have to start a new federation affiliated with BASS).

Interesting position by BASS on the money....

My understanding (and I can be wrong) is that each state Federation was a state chartered not for profit corporation. If that is trhe case, and (again, my understanding only) if there is no "franchsie agrement" dictating where the money goes after dis-affiliation. That money belongs to the corporation... There may be some "constructive trust" argument that the funds sent for National Dues belong to the National, but that argument belongs to the affected members who can by their own club action revoke that designation so long as the money has not been transmitted to BASS (a cute ploy by the clubs and members would be to do just that in writing from each club to the Federation). This is going to be fun...

I am especially impressed with BASS "appointing" acting Presidents for independent corporations that they do not own or control. I bet if each Federation could find a member lawyer who was willing to go to Court they could get an injunction barring BASS from ineterfering or appointing a President to avoid confusion and prevent imminent harm to the functioniong of the Federation.

BF, that is a lot of info. what you have posted is pretty much what we are being told by the MA Federation.

i actually received a letter from BASS today, stating that they have not recieved the dews from our club, so they were sending this packet out to the club presidents. i think they are starting to feel the presure of many of the states following the TBF.

i was told only three states were going to stay affiliated with BASS.

in the info packet from BASS, they made it very clear that any state that did not stay with them, would not be without a BASS federation. i just wounder how they plan on building up enough clientell if the majority go with TBF.

the hole thing sounds a little stupid if you ask me. you have to ask what was behind this action, why would they be so quick to throw out the seven reps.

all i know is i just want to fish, i hope the hole thing gets settled before the ice melts.

;)GregD, If you've followed this at all I believe their altimate goal is to grow their Weekend Series Tournament participation. In order to do this they need the Classic slots as a carrot to hang out there for people to chase after. ( IE Federation stands in the way of this) This would be ESPN/Bass's draw for fisherman to participate. Like BFL and Everstarts the 21% that doesn't get payed back to the Tournament payout goes back to ESPN/BASS for expenses.

Plus this would give them the control they want to set tournament fee's, payouts and what ever else they want. Ultimately it's all about money and how to grow their shareholders stocks. If it proves to be unprofitable, ESPN will drop BASS and everything associated with it like a hot potato. It's all about the money. This is just my opinion but I'm an analyst and looking into the future of whats going on is what I do.:(;)

Bassin Fool, You've hit the nail right head! "It's all about the money" ... ESPN doesn't give a rats behind about Bass Fishing, Tournaments, Kids programs or anything else! As far as I am concerned, B.A.S.S was doomed the minute ESPN aquired it! The very second they start losing money on BASS, it will be sold off or shutdown - they're no different than Ford or GM, they have to answer to their stockholders, not Bass Fishermen!

Have you noticed that since the ESPN aquisition, the increased level of commercialization? They hung Forrest Wood and Ranger out to dry without any regard to what he has given the sport and painted beer advertisements all over the boats... I enjoy drinking a beer and no one has done more for outdoor sports than Anheuser-Busch but I would rather it not be plastered all over the boats...

You watch - how long before we see a Mercury Verado with a Viagra add on it at the Classic..................

I'm removing the BASS stickers from my truck and boat (which say LIFE MEMBER!!) and replacing them with FLW / BFL logos!!

Just my two cents.............

My club voted to stay with BASS, because TBF has presented no concrete alternative, just possiblities. Our region voted to follow TBF and I think that is the way Virginia is going to go. If a state stays unified and intact I think the average fisherman will see very little change. Other than the highly skilled and fortunate anglers who qualify for the divisional and ultimatly the national championship, most of the tournaments that the majority of Federation members fish are funded and run by the state fed. or local clubs. I guess this could change, but at this point there have been only rumors of a trickle down affect that could happen with TBF and with whoever they strike a deal.

Regardless of how this all shakes out, going forward there should be written agreements between each state and the mother organization. This will help eliminate alot of the problems that now exist. Such as, who gets what if there is a break up, who can expell officers/members and for what reasons, how will dues increases be handled, ect.... And communication must be improved. At this point I don't see where TBF is any better at this function than BASS. TBF website has not been updated in over one month and my club has had no communication from them.

The other thing I would like to see put in place if TBF takes over and in my own state is term limits for Officers and board members. This may mean more people have to do more than just fish and put in their two cents, but that should be a good thing.

Just my opinion. HP

My question is how will TBF handle the insurance coverage provided by bass for club tournaments and federation members?

BF

I don't understand everything that's going on here but I couldn't agree more with BF about all about money and ESPN dropping BASS like a hot potatoe. Framkly, I don't understand ANY of their philosophy. In 2005 the guy in the back of the boat could win a tournament and never catch a fish. Now they"re going from 200 to 100 boats per Pro tour tournament? This as per the Pro Commette's request/recommendation? It all seemed pretty simple to me, a pro in the front a Co in the back, pay your entrance fees and go fishing. Who ever catches the most fish--wins! My BASS membership runs out tomorrow and I'm not renewing. Let Skeet and the G-man pay the bills. This is their request, their format, let them support it. And for that matter (for all you sponsers that seem to be taking a "hands off" attitude) let Flow Master (as an example) sell all it's mufflers to Skeet. It seems to me the FLW/Stren/BFL system is less complicated. No rules, nothing extra to join. Just enter the tournament, show up, pay your entrance fees and if you do well you get paid (better) and you can move up. BOTH Pro's and Co's. Just one man's opinion. Thanks for listening:D

thanks for the great posts guys, it is intersting to see how the rest of the country is responding to this isssue.

i have renewed my BASS membership, and probably will continue to do so. i will also follow what ever my local federation chooses to do. i don't have any crazy ideas of going on to any national tournys. i just want a chance to fish the state fish off and enjoy the sport i have been involved with since i was just a kid.
