We've been SEEING it for the last month....some is due to spawning,..some is due to C&R fishing pressure and some may be VHS....some for unknown reasons. The DNR took several dead fish for testing...results won't be known for several weeks.

We saw a bunch of dead ones 2 weeks ago when the MVM was in town....

Yeah,..it's a bummer,..but considering the overall health of the great lakes and the unbelievably prolific fishery...this spring mortality is a drop in the bucket. The spawn alone will more than replenish the number's lost to die-off. But,..not all of the fry will make it to adulthood either, and it will take several years for those fish to reach maturity. Ma nature has a way of taking care of her own...the DNR has said this year's die-off is no worse than previous years, so all we can do is wait for the DNR's report on what "might" have contributed to the various species dying off...AND,..continue to take care of those fish, EVERYTIME we handle them!;)

It has been determined that it is a native bacteria strain that manifests every now and again. The overall population of the lake isnt going to suffer from a few thousand dead fish....that was stated by MDNR Fisheries Biologist Mike Thomas.
