On September 26th, I was putting up a watering station at my deer lease. I had built a stand to elevate a 55 gallon drum off of the ground in order to let it flow properly into the water trough float valve below. I filled the barrel half-way, figuring I could easily wrestle 230lbs (8.35 lbs per gallon x approximately 27.5 gallons) onto the stand by tilting it over, and then combination lifting / pushing the barrel onto the stand...
.... I was wrong.
As I began to push the barrel off the ground and onto the stand, I discovered that I'm either weaker than I anticipated, or the water weighed more than I thought. Probably a combo of both, but more likely me being weaker than I thought. My arms would not pull up more. My right calf started to ache. It got worse. My right calf "locked up", and I couldn't go up or down. I had to belly push the barrel into place. I fell to the ground, tears welling up slightly due to the pain I now felt in my calf. I limped back to the truck, put stuff away, and went home.
My calf ached for weeks. I could walk on it, but it was very tender. I unknowingly started putting more pressure on my left leg to compensate, and the pain lessened. Then my neck started giving me problems. It got worse. I saw a doctor who started with X-Rays, then a C-Scan, and ultimately, sending me to a specialist yesterday to have my sinuses and throat scoped to see if I had anything "wrong internally". The findings? Knotted muscles. Recommended - Deep Tissue massage. I had not mentioned the calf muscle to the doc, as I figured that would go away in time.
I met up with my massage therapist yesterday. New guy. Small dude. My first thought? Well, this ain't gonna get done right.
... Wrong again.
This guy was good. He listened. Started on my right shoulder. I was almost screaming when he started massaging muscle tissue back into place. I could feel the knots when he would get to them. They hurt - BAD. After about 15 minutes of torture, he switched to my left shoulder for the same treatment. Then my neck. He then turned his attention to that right calf muscle.
.... Bad news.
"I can help work out some of this, but I think you TORE this muscle. It's bad". Crap. No wonder it hurt for so long.
I went home feeling great. Drank tons of water, as instructed. Fell asleep in 5 seconds.
Woke up this morning, feeling like I went 10 rounds with Tyson, and he had me against the rope beating me in the back and shoulders. Jeez!
I have to go back. I don't WANT to go back... I HAVE to go back. He informed me that he wasn't done. I know he isn't. I could feel it. But I only had a 1 hour appointment. I know it's for the best, and it will eventually feel better. But I'm hurting this morning.
All the best,
Glenn
