On September 26th, I was putting up a watering station at my deer lease. I had built a stand to elevate a 55 gallon drum off of the ground in order to let it flow properly into the water trough float valve below. I filled the barrel half-way, figuring I could easily wrestle 230lbs (8.35 lbs per gallon x approximately 27.5 gallons) onto the stand by tilting it over, and then combination lifting / pushing the barrel onto the stand...

.... I was wrong.

As I began to push the barrel off the ground and onto the stand, I discovered that I'm either weaker than I anticipated, or the water weighed more than I thought. Probably a combo of both, but more likely me being weaker than I thought. My arms would not pull up more. My right calf started to ache. It got worse. My right calf "locked up", and I couldn't go up or down. I had to belly push the barrel into place. I fell to the ground, tears welling up slightly due to the pain I now felt in my calf. I limped back to the truck, put stuff away, and went home.

My calf ached for weeks. I could walk on it, but it was very tender. I unknowingly started putting more pressure on my left leg to compensate, and the pain lessened. Then my neck started giving me problems. It got worse. I saw a doctor who started with X-Rays, then a C-Scan, and ultimately, sending me to a specialist yesterday to have my sinuses and throat scoped to see if I had anything "wrong internally". The findings? Knotted muscles. Recommended - Deep Tissue massage. I had not mentioned the calf muscle to the doc, as I figured that would go away in time.

I met up with my massage therapist yesterday. New guy. Small dude. My first thought? Well, this ain't gonna get done right.

... Wrong again.

This guy was good. He listened. Started on my right shoulder. I was almost screaming when he started massaging muscle tissue back into place. I could feel the knots when he would get to them. They hurt - BAD. After about 15 minutes of torture, he switched to my left shoulder for the same treatment. Then my neck. He then turned his attention to that right calf muscle.

.... Bad news.

"I can help work out some of this, but I think you TORE this muscle. It's bad". Crap. No wonder it hurt for so long.

I went home feeling great. Drank tons of water, as instructed. Fell asleep in 5 seconds.

Woke up this morning, feeling like I went 10 rounds with Tyson, and he had me against the rope beating me in the back and shoulders. Jeez!

I have to go back. I don't WANT to go back... I HAVE to go back. He informed me that he wasn't done. I know he isn't. I could feel it. But I only had a 1 hour appointment. I know it's for the best, and it will eventually feel better. But I'm hurting this morning.

All the best,

Glenn

Geeze Glenn....you need to take better care out there.

Next time, use two barrels. Hoist up the empty one and pump the water up from the one on the ground. The older I get, the more I use stuff like ramps, hoists, levers and such to get stuff done.

Hope you recover soon.

I will work on the long run Glenn. I had something similar. One leg surgery and had to compensate for such a long time I began to have a sore back. Found it was due to compensation froms standing mostly on one leg. Have done a ton of rehab to strengthen the leg and now no back problems. The message did help and will lessen over time.

You have his description/job title wrong.

It's Massage Terrorist! :p

Though folks that are good at that (and this one certainly seems like he is in that category), really can do wonders. But they will put you through the paces and 'stretch' your pain threshold.

I had a bad heel spur and they doctor's first word was surgery. I'd be out of work for 6 weeks on crutches. I was thinking about it when a friend told me about a massage therapist. It took 6 visits but she broke the heel spur with a combination of massage and pressure. It did hurt at the beginning. It's been almost 6 years and I have no more problems. I swear by it and have referred others to her. I know it hurts but in the long run it's worth it.

My physical therapy for my knee replacement hurt more than the surgery. Take care and heal properly.

i had same sort of thing,[picked up a deer] dr visits, therapy, ect . finally one day went to dr no apt, lots of pain, dr not there saw nurse asst. she says you got pain pills and muscle relaxers take 2 of each . i said but that will just knock me out . she just looked at me and said when you wake up do it again . one lost weekend but i sure felt better.

Massage Therapist can do wonders on muscle related problems. The worst shape you are in the more it hurts at first, but trust me, it gets better with each visit and eventually you will come to look forward to your appointments rather than dread them. If it doesn't hurt, change therapist, if he/she puts you to sleep during yur massage, change therapist. I'm guessing this is your first experience with this. You can also get your insurance company to pay part of it. Hang in there.

Ouch! Sorry to hear about your "incident"... Hope things get better quickly. But, as you are too hobbled up to go back out into the woods... send me that new Encore and I'll give you a full written report by mid-Spring...:D:D:D

I thought little of it the first time I went until I sat down. I called a buddy to tell him it was a waste of $40.00. Then I said wait a min, I am sitting down with out pain. Shelia did in 1 hour what my chiropractors could not do in 10. It was all stress and I passed on both neck and back surgery. The chiropratctors tell you they are putting your spine or what ever back in place because your muscles are pulling them out and they have to retrain the muscle. Message Theraphy relaxes the muscle.

It's not my first time going to a massage place, but it is the first time I've had this type of treatment. A few years ago, I was having really bad neck and shoulder problems that my doc couldn't fix. My wife took me to a massage place and they did a pretty decent job of working out some of the kinks for me. At least I could move my neck after the visit, which was almost impossible before. I've got a lot of shoulder and back injuries and issues, noted by the VA when I retired. I've been to a relaxing massage that almost put me to sleep - felt good at the time, but didn't do much for me afterwards. And then there was this guy that I just saw. Totally different type of massage than I've ever had. I'm feeling pretty good today. I'm still a little sore, but not as bad as yesterday.

All the best,

Glenn

Fatrap, your knee replacement therapy hurt?

I did my own, that is after I walked out of the hospital one day after the replacement!

I was done with the passive motion machine in one week and was playing basketball in 3 months. That was in 02 and haven't stopped since. Infact I still coach, play ball and am a high school official. The knee replacement was the best thing I ever did.

What a buddy! Thanks Greg! I'll package up the .25-06 and 7mm-08 barrels, along with the frame and hardware and get it out to you this afternoon. I'll throw in an envelope with enough money to buy a couple of scopes for them. I'm not picky on brand, just as long as it's Nikon or better quality (I'll include enough for Leopolds, as I know that is probably what you will install). I'd like them zero'd for sub-MOA groupings, and if you wouldn't mind working up some handloads and providing the formula, that would be wonderful. I'll have TC's custom shop ship the .357 barrel direct to you. Should be there by late January according to the last report from the shop. What a pal! Thanks!

:p :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

I ain't "that" hobbled up.

Man, I love playing around with this new Encore! You were right - it's addictive. I'm only using the 7mm-08 barrel right now, and only at close distances, as I don't have a scope yet and that barrel has sights on it as well. Pretty neat too. I've never owned a rifle with the fold-down rear sight. I've seen them before, just never owned one. My .25-06 barrel is scope mount only, so that one is waiting for some optics. This payday, it gets a new pair of eyes mounted on top. Thanks for all the help and suggestions in this endeavor. I'm enjoying it!

All the best,

Glenn

LOL Tox. I was thinking the same thing.....

Toxic,

There used to be alot of those places around the military bases I was stationed at. From what I hear, there were only females working there and they offered "Happy Finishes" for a few dollars more :p:p:p:p:p

Scott

Yeah but "those" places only work on 1 muscle!!

Sorry brother, I couldn't resist.

TOXIC

... Still took them a full hour to handle that one.

:blink:Took her 59 minutes to find it?

Sorry I couldnt resist!

Randy

I about pissed myself the first time I went to the physical therapy place. I had in house for three weeks, that was bad but Sol at Flex Physical Therapy beat the crap out of me. I ended up with my graduation T Shirt award a week early because of my efforts to not let him get the best of me.

Funny note the in house PT was a dog lover. My vizsla ALF loved her. She'd massage his hips and back, neck. He'd just lay there and make groanig noises. When she'd pull into the driveway he run in circles with excitement.

Problems with my new knee are non existent now. I went out and bird hunted for four hours shot three quail and two roosters in some tough country. No problems.

To this day the best thing I have ever done for something that I have screwed up on myself and that list is long!

Sorry to highjack the thread!!!!!

Randy!

Glenn,

You getting better?

BTW this turned into a great thread with the happy ending and all!!!

Randy, no issues after a bit with the replacement?

Remember what they say; What doesn't kill you makes you strong! :D

It's hard to beat a good technician that can wring out a torn and tense muscle by hand. I've had some of the best hand healing work done by some of the scariest looking people when I played ball. (Man, it hurt like HADES!!! ) They fixed me up and gave me the ability for a night's rest when I thought that would never happen again. I'm sure you already know that it really stings at first, but with a good MT you will be thankful by rehab's end. Good luck! ;)

None Carlos. Thinking of having the other knee done too. football tore them up.

Randy!
