I am considering going to lithium batteries for my trolling motor.
Is a 24v battery better than two 12v in series?
How is the charge length? Do they last longer than lead acid?
How different are they from using lead acid? I heard they should not be charged as frequently. How are they different to maintain, charge than lead acid?
How has your experience been going from lead to lithium?
Is there any brands you would recommend? Some to stay away from.
This is my two cents worth as a new convert to LifePo4 (lithium) troll motor batteries:
1. I opted to go with two (2) 12V 100AH, group 24 ( 10' X 8" x 7" size) batteries rather than one 24V battery to run my 24V 80# Ultrex.
Reasons: Handling 2, 22 pound units is easier space use than placing one larger 44-50 pound battery. 12V battery is more standard in use and gives you the use of 12V as an option for other connections needing 12V. At the time of my purchase, two, 12v batteries were cheaper than one 24V battery. I caught a sale on Ebay and got two for $129 each battery- no shipping cost. Weight reduction, at the back of the boat, was almost 100 pounds!
2. Charging is faster, you must use a LifeP04 capable charger unit. Most new chargers can detect 12V or 24V automatically. LifePo4 batteries will outlast and out perform other types of batteries if maintained properly.
3. Most of the information I have found indicates that it is better to keep lithium batteries charged in the 80-20% capacity range, only occasionally charging them to 100% to maintain "balanced" cells within the battery.
4. After a month's use i have discovered that I can fish light windy conditions for 18 hours (not all at one time!) and use only about 25% of capability. I'm using the Z18 with full fuel, along with a partner for half the time stated. mostly running between 4 and 6 speed setting on the dial.
5. There are a ton of decent batteries out there- many manufactured in China that have have excellent reviews in testing and use. (See multiple in depth reviews on YouTube) Prices are down to the level now where you can get them for about the same price or less that even the AGM units.
I'm well satisfied so far. I bought "Weize" brand batteries (bright green case) from an E-Bay seller and seeing some better pricing on E-bay than Amazon. I use both often.
I would say be sure to get batteries that have overcharge protection, overheat, and cold charge protection circuits built in - it seems that most do. Some have a blue tooth feature (adds to the cost a little) that will let you check battery condition on your phone with a App.
