I have a 798c SI (non HD) at my console. It doesn't have ethernet capabilities. I am wanting a unit on the bow that will use interlink with the console so that and GPS is needed. Ideally I would love an SI unit there too, but price wise I don't think it is gonna happen. DI would be nice, but from what I understand it is not a very good choice on the Trolling motor. Give me some ideas. I have even gone as far as thinking of getting another SI transducer and quick disconnect mount and move the 798 from front to back (but don't really want to do this).

Ideas? 788? others?

The 788 has an internal GPS, so if you bought it, you wouldn't need ethernet or interlink for GPS. (Besides, accoording to HB Greg, the non-HD 798 isn't ethernet capable anyway.) You can always use a media card to save and transfer waypoints between the two units. As for DI not being a good choice for the trolling motor, I'm missing the logic.

My buddy has a 788 on his bow. He seldom uses the down imaging, preferring instead to split the screen between chart and sonar. I just bought a 798 non-HD, and have been using the three-way split with chart, sonar, and down imaging only for positive ID on structure(images) showing up on sonar. Sometimes I use the sonar/DI/SI to see the images(structure)together to get a feel for what I'd be seeing if I was using just one screen. You can mark a waypoint in any screen. I suspect as I become more proficient and confident that I'll go to using dual split like he does.

The 798 or 788 units can use INTERLINK to share GPS data between units.

There are three 798 units, 798c SI Combo, 798ci SI Combo, and 798ci HD SI Combo

There are four 788 units, 788c Combo, 788ci Combo, 788ci HD Combo, 788ci HD DI Combo

The HD versions can use Ethernet to share data between units.

The units without the (i) are external GPS antenna models.

Combo means it is a combination of sonar and GPS.

Side Imaging is THE thing on the trolling motor once you learn how works. I rarely even use 2D sonar anymore at the bow unless I am vertical fishing. I use DI even less.

Wayne does it again! Thanks for clarifying. I have the internal antenna model; I should not make assumptions.:D

Your SI transducer on the trolling motor is good idea so you can switch display locations. I did that the first year I had Side Imaging. I convinced me to get more SI units.

All you would need is a MSM mount, a PC-11 power cord, and the trolling motor puck version of the Compact SI transducer

(XTM 9 SI 180 T).

If you had another Humminbird unit that was not HD or DI you could interchange them since both use the same parts and a 2D unit will use the 83/200 kHz 2D frequencies of the SI transducer. That would give you the flexibility to have the technology were you want it at a lower cost.

******Corrected to remove the SYSLINK cable note---not needed with the internal GPS antenna version

Great info Wayne thanks.........ps. did you get my message from BBC that I never reveived your emial regarding my power cutting out on my 798?

I have a 798ci si on the console and just bought a 788ci HD. When both are running I get really bad interference. What can I do to fix this?

MattC

How are they wired? To the TM battery or cranking battery? they should be wired to the cranking battery.

Also, if there is an extra transducer mounted close to one of those unit's transducer, it could cause interference ( I had an older in-dash flasher unit whose transducer was/is mounted right next to the HB transducer and would cause interference when it was on; I disconnected power to the flasher and solved the problem.)

Something I saw today was a video from Doug Vahlrenberg (Doug V.) in which he suggests not running your transducer cable along the trolling motor control cables, as there "is a lot of electrical current running thru them" that may perhaps cause interference.

Matt, if your "interference" is cross talk, you cannot prevent that. That will happen between two units operating on the same frequency and the sonar pulses overlap no matter what brands are involved. Turn one of the units off.

dchance, I don't recall your message on BBC, I get dozens of messages every day on several web sites and try not to miss any.

Question-I have a z6 with a 757c indash and I purchased a 898cSI. Is it better to put this unit on the bow with trolling motor or install it on the transom and the unit by the driver? Ideas???

JW, if you are not familiar with using Side Imaging, it is best to learn with a console display and transom mounted transducer.

You can do the same dual station setup and use the display at both locations. Just use a RAM mount for ease of changing locations. The 898c SI has a gimbal mount.
