For the life of me I cannot recall the diameter of my Tempest prop. It's for a Merc 175. I figured you had them memorized. I do know it's a 3 blade 25 pitch. I'm trying to post to get a spare. If I go to a 4 blade, what changes in pitch do you guys suggest? I just want to have a spare and would like it to be a 4 blade to see what performance difference I can expect.

Hey Rob.

A while back I was in Missouri and there was this prop guy who had this van he drove to tournaments. You paid a deposite and you'd try out all these different wheels and find the one that preformed the best on your rig. Then you could buy it. He more or less knew what to start you with. I never heard of anything like that, but with all the lakes and such up in your area it wouldn't suprise me if someone did that kind of thing. Sure would save a lot of time.

Rob, the tempest is a 14.5" wheel. The general rule is when you go to a 4 blade is to go up one inch in pitch so a 26" trophy would be what you need. keep in mind when you change to a 4 blade you will have to mess with motor height because the tempest will handle more engine height then the trophy will in stock trim. As far as performance differences its tough to tell because every hull is different. For example on my 882 i tried a 24 and a 22 trophy and the holeshot was worse then the tempest because of too much ventilation and i also lost some speed as well. Other hulls will respond in a different manner, the only way to know is to try it. From the performance you have described earlier it sounds like your rig runs extremely well now and you shouldnt change a thing.

Jim, I don't plan to change anything, but if I draw a 350 lb fella as a co-angler some day, I want to be sure I can keep that hole shot. I don't mind sacrificing 2-3 mph for a day as long as the boat moves. Plus I need a spare. With the new water I'm fishing this year, it's good insurance.

Good point, you just need to make sure you dont go the other way with it. My 882 with a full well almost wouldnt get on plane with the 21 trophy and with the 24 is was downright abysmal. It just vented so bad the prop never bit in to make th eboat go. with my 23 tempest it gets right up with everything full no problem. If you got one you would have to test it with an extra load to make sure its good. you could always drop to a 23 tempest for more holeshot when ultra loaded as well.

CAAAAUSE.....if I hit a reef and mangle the prop in a tourney, a hub won't do me a whole lot of good alone! LOL

Rob, the thing is if you smack something hard enough to wreck a stainless prop you most likley will ruin the gears as well. I dont carry a prop for just that reason. the time i hit a rock and ruined the prop the gears were toast too so a prop would have done me zero with nothing to attach it to. I also ruined a set or gears and a propshaft hitting a log, prop was fine. I do carry a hub but not a prop.

If you go to a four blade drop one pitch size. If you have a 25 drop to a 24. A spare hub kit is cheap insurance with a stainless prop. They run about $40.00.
