Well guys, I might be joining the ranks with those that are laid off. We just got word that the big contract we really needed to keep the plant open got awarded to the competition. I work in aftermarket, and we are strong, but I am only one person, and as good as our dept is, we cannot keep 60 people working by ourselves. I think that within the next 6 months, they will shut us down. I finally had the deal going that I needed to be able also fish, and now this. I think I will forward my resume to all the boat mfrs in MO and AR. This economy bites the big one. So sleep with one eye open all, NOBODY is safe right now. I have no doubt that I can secure an even better paying job quickly, but it was the hidden benefits that kept me here. The boss encouraged my fishing. What to do? OK Trep, send me your stinkin classifieds! LOL How far are you from Gainesville? Man a 2.4 billion dollar loss, how do you go about business as usual?
 
Rob....you sure got that one right! I think with all these scandals,market unstable, loosing my arse in my retirement money and everyone running scared...it's only gonna' get worse.I work for the government and even MY job is NOT safe.

Boy if ever there was a time to go pro full time, it's NOW! I am getting increasingly tired of working for big companies that view you as a commodity.
 
Rob - Sorry to hear it, but keep your eyes wide open in today's job market there is no such thing as a safe job. I've changed every 2-3 years volunarily due to better opportunities, pay and location so I never consider a job/company as a long term option. If it works out, heck, i'd love to retire in 20 years having worked from home the entire time with IBM. But, I don't think that is realistic.



If you are serious about looking, make sure your current boss does not know/find out that can cook your goose very quickly.

Seems like big companies are treating their employees like they are a dime a dozen. Maybe they should start chopping at the top and work their way down. Sure would put a quick end to corporate scandals.



We had a problem here over working, under pay, no respect, and being threatened we would lose our jobs. Well, there are only 5 of us and we sat down with a human resource rep. and the vice-president of the company and told them exactly how it was, especially that over the last 3 years, 9 people have resigned from the position after some were here for over 15 years, and some only 2 months and what does that say about our jobs.



This Tuesday, we were given a $2.00 an hour raise and they are in the process of looking for more techs to help us out.

I guess our company finally took a good look at what people are actually doing around here and we could single handedly shut this place down.



Change is good Rob! Hang in there and I'm sure you'll find something!!

Not looking Trep, but I'm also not about to stick my head in the sand and pretend I don't know what's coming next. I hope we do make it, and I can stay. But it never hurts to have a safety net.

I too have been laid off, been for a month now. At first I was like wtf?!, but come to find out it was for personal conflicts with the bigger boss, not my abilty.

I have had time on my hands to think things over and now see it as a blessing in disguise. I am taking this oppurtunity that was "handed" to me and running with it. My plans are to go back to school and research opening my own business. I too am fed up with working for companies that don't care whether we have families to feed or not.



If it does happen, look at the positive and take the oppurtunity to do something you truly love... it may be time to join the pro circuit for you!!!!
 
Your on the right track keeping your eyes and ears open. 2 of the companies I left because of poor management of merger/acquisitions, and left 6-12 months before they layed off my team and replacment. You've got the right idea and as Bruce said keep all your options open!
 
I was caught cold when a company that I only worked at for eleven months closed its doors. I left a very solid job of twelve years to go to this place because of more money. Being unemployed was a struggle for a while but I got a job and it turned out to be a springboard to my current job. It has all worked out for the best but I still keep a resume ready because I'm too paranoid to get comfortable.

My wife and I have also discussed taking my guide service full time, or possibly buying one of the bigger ones already established. I would have a staff of guides and she would manage it while I'm on the road at tourneys. I did hear through the grapevine though that Roland Martin has bought a piece of land on the water and plans to open a guide service here. This will start a price war, I can just see it now. I like the competition though. We treat our clients the best, and they return. We have pulled many a fish along side of skunked boats, only to have THEIR clients approach us at the ramp and ask for a card right in front of the guide they were with all day that couldn't produce. My fear is benefits. I only pay $75 a month right now for the best package I have ever seen. On my own, it would cost me in excess of $700 a month for the family, that's a stinkin mortgage. Guess I have to fish really hard and win the classic! Become an overnight millionare....ha! to dream.
 
You should contact Roland and tell him you might be willing to have him as a 60/40 partner - he being the 40% of course. Don't get into a war with a big reputation and unlimited funds. He'll work you to death. Competition is only good for the customers not business owners (business 101).

That's it, and I would have 4 months of down time in the winter, unless we also incorporated a B&B with the lodge and brought in skiers. It's all rather interesting at this point. Be home with the family most of the time. Really I just want a huge, borderling obnoxious motor coach that we live out of, towing my boat and fishing the circuit, and coming home for the holidays to our camp in the mountains. Wouldn't that be tough? LOL

Barb, I hear the chances of winning the lottery are the same whether or not you buy a ticket. I haven't bought one yet, but I'm hoping to win soon!
 
hell,...just set up a booth across from rolands place and sell helicopter lures,....you'll be rich in no time!!

Mac - He'd have to come up with a new lure, maybe the Airplane lure "it glides like a 747 comming into LAX" or the cruising lure "it bumps along like a south central low rider with hydralics!!" LOL
 
Oh, Oh how about the TREPPER lure - Its long and thin like a Senkok, very bouyand so it falls slowly AND naturaly powered like burning a spinnerbait!!! Oh and it LOOKS GREAT!!!
 
Let's not get carried away here! How about the Hooter's lure? Mini, any suggestions?

....during the hard water season set up a shanty village and rent them out by the day. I've been looking at employment opportunities back home and it seems most of the work is across the lake in Burlington, with the exception of the drug company up in Rouses Point. PARC isn't growing as fast as they thought, and I thought it was hilarious that they're selling off base housing units as "retirement condos". Something will come up, it always does.
 
Rob, Sorry to hear about your possible position. Suggestion for what it is worth, contact Roland Martin and see if you can get into something with him. He might be willing to have someone with your skill on his team. He will need someone local anyway so why not the best man. I know for a fact Art Ferguson in Michigan used to, not sure if he still does, work for Roland and in the winter he would go to Florida and guide down there. Maybe you can work out something like that with him. Just a suggestion, I will keep my eyes and ears open for you.
