Well, I ventured down and fished the SC Federation tournament this weekend on the Hill (Clark Hill/Thurmond). Drew a good partner, who had us on fish. Trouble is, I somewhat shot myself in the foot.

I was told starting out that he'd be C-rigging some areas, but I had planned to start with a jerkbait and/or a trap. I did that until he put 2 in the boat. Then I switched to a jig, using it slowly, just barely hopping it along. Got it really hung up on something, and had to cut. So then I just took out a pre-rigged C-rig, tied it on and went to c-rigging. Mistake, that it took me 30 minutes to realize.

The problem was that my jig rod had fireline on it. Fairly heavy fireline. First good bite, and I snapped off my leader. Second bite, happened again. Then the third bite, I felt like I must have ripped it out of his mouth. Then 'ol dummy' realized that I was getting no stretch at all with the fireline, and really screwing myself. I then re-rigged with a standard mono setup.

Guess what - caught fish! Managed to get two in the boat. Missed 3 more. Once not paying attention close enough, the second time, I had the fish on the way to the boat, but he spit the hook. Didn't get a good enough hook set, as the hook was just barely through the worm. Third fish, hit it good, but just couldn't get a hook up.

Partner managed a limit (around 11.5 lbs), and couldn't ever really cull up. He put about 8 or 9 in the boat all together. He used a 6" worm, I was using a 4" Zoom finesse worm, in green pumpkin. He was using a similar color.

We fished the Soap creek area, not too far in from the main channel of the lake. Key was finding secondary points within the creek, that had gravel/rock structure around. Second key was fishing very, very slow. I mean very slow. We were just simply dragging the worms. We saw any number of boats also fishing our 'spots', but never took a fish.

I didn't stay for the entire weighin, but best weights were around 11-12 lbs. Two nice 6lb'ers were on the board.

Talked to several others that were also staying at Hickory Knob state park (very nice place), and they all had said they were not getting many bites. Water temps in the mid to lower 50's.

Neither or us got any bites on crankbaits, traps or jerkbaits, all day long. Heading to Lake Keowee (near Clemson) this weekend for a two day club tourney. Guys weekend away. Fishing and NCAA basketball!

Tex what pound test wasa the leader that you were throwing? I c-rig a lot with spider wire 40#, i like it a lot for that application because the low stretch gives me a good hookset when there is a lot of line out there. I throw a 12# leaded and i have never snapped one off on the hookset and i sent the hook hard and i use a powerful rod when i c-rig.

I would need to look it up to be sure, but it was probably 8 or 10 lb. I've never had a problem with these leaders before. Once switching back to mono line combo, I had no more problems.

Strange. I use Fireline on all my worm and jig outfits, and I've never had the problem of breaking 'em off with a hookset. I use 14lb smoke colored with worms, a little heavier on jigs. Mono on everything else...

Got it. That makes sense. Clarks Hill can be a tough lake. Glad you found fish.

Fished a small club tourney at Wateree over weekend. I hear the lake's been hot this spring, but you couldn't prove it by our bags. Winning weight was only 11 pounds, and big fish was about 4 1/2.

I did terrible. I did real well in our last tourney there, so I had high hopes. A least the weather was beautiful and I have my health!

Our next tournament is on Russell the first weekend of April...

Jim,

Well, maybe we can help each other some. I don't have my schedule with me, but I'll post it up here later today/tomorrow. I'm fishing Russell in April, but it will be the third week. Anything that you can pass my way after your trip, would be appreciated.

I'm fishing Keowee this weekend, Santee Cooper in early April, then Russell. We have Wateree several times this year in May/June timeframe.

Guy's,

I tried Fireline 2 weeks ago for the first time. I had bad experiences with it. May I ask you for some training/advice?? for using Fireline??

I could not see the line on the rod (grey line + grey day)and had a difficult time trying to tie lures to it. I also had the weight wrap around the pole and it did take a good 10 minutes to get it untangled. I put it down and used old reliable after that.

I hear many persons who swore off the line due its difficulties and read on the BFHP many who dislike it immensely, However, maybe I'm doing something wrong?? Sure would like your advice or maybe your description on how to correctly use it.

Fish Santee-Cooper, Tail Race, Charleston SC Harbor.

Got caught on the Tail Race when those storms came in 2 weekends ago. Weather went from mild to 40 MPH winds with rain in less than 2-3 minutes. Temp dropped almost 5 degrees in less than a minute, Just like we had entered a refrigerator. Got off the water quick, safely. Good, talented, and safety concsious (sp) fishing partner,(May I include myself also) we are both aware of the safety issues on the water and both have experience on the water (fresh & Salt)for years kept us safe.

I'm not sold on it as yet, and also am not on the 'negative' side. I bought it for a specific reason (jig fishing around grass/structure). No problem with the knot on the jig - I used a palomar. Held fine. I however, would not attempt to use another knot.
