I am changing from an electric steer trolling motor to a cable foot controlled. I am installing a motorguide gator mount. Have to drill all new holes. I purchased the new motorguide installation kit. Any tips as to how to mount? Does the motor have to be level? I have a fish & ski and the bow of the boat slants forward and the bow surface isn't flat (has a hump in the middle).

Thanks

My neigbor made his level with the deck by buying some of those plastic boards and cutting a wedge shaped piece that tapered to the slope of his boat. The then drilled it and mounted it with the normal rubber screws and a few stainless carriage bolts. It looked factory.

To add on to Mike's advice, yes, it should be level. Otherwise it will bind and squeak. The bind will cause you to go through a lot of release ropes and if you have ever had one break while pulling on it......you will make sure it's level!!:lol:

I have a sport 189. Mine came from the dealer rigged with some sort of aluminium "quick release" piece under it. This is very cool, but also I think it help the mounting proccess. You may want to talk to the parts dept. about it, see if you can't get one. Then it's just a matter of 1 "thumb" screw and the propper turn and lift, and the whole motor comes off bracket & all. Also I've heard SO many talking about "loose and rattly" brackets, of which after a few years of SERIOUS use, I have not experienced. Good Luck!;)

I have a Minn Kota Vortex on my Tundra now and it plain just doesn't flex, groan, wiggle, rattle it's like a frickin steel I beam.:)
