My brakes are dragging enough to get the wheels hot and then yesterday the brakes would actually smoke some after stops. Any idea what would cause this?

Maybe the tongue isn't sliding correctly. If it doesn't release it will keep pressure on the pads.

this happened to mine once after I had the brakes replaced. I just backed off the pads a little by moving the adjustment wheel and never had a problems after. Apparently they adjusted them too tightly when they put the new ones on!

Randy!

The tongue appears to be sliding all the way. I have disc brakes so I don't think I have any adjustment??

Not to sound stupid but have you checked the fluid level? Are you sure it's the brakes and not hubs? Have you tripped the safety wire? If all checks out then it has to be in the actuator.

TOXIC

Full of fluid, safety cable is correct and the hubs are fine. It's the brakes on both sides too so that also leads me back to the actuator. I guess I'm going to have to tear into this weekend and see what I can figure out.

Is it all the time or when initially hooked up and the first few brakings that this occurs? The slight glaze of rust that builds up between uses will "burn" off like this. You should have a minor amount of heat build-up while this happens.

If it is a constant grabbing of the pads, you may want to break the wheels down and compress the calipers with a C-clamp, visually inspecting for rust or burr hangs in the caliper piston. (With the resevoir cap off.) I would attack the accuator/plunger assembly as a last attempt. They are a PIA and pretty much require a second set of hands for a R&R. Good Luck!

the first two tihngs i would look at ar the cailpers, make sure they are free and also inspect the lines and mek sure there are no kinks in it. If thas not is you most likley have a bad master in the actuator. The ufp ones arent too bad to take apart( i did mine on my 882 a number of times for various reasons).

I had one brke overheating on my 882 once and it was caused by the line that was run on top of the axle getting crushed and locking the brake up on the sid ethast it fed. The boat must have hit the line when i was putting it on the trailer since thats the only thing i can thnk of that would have flattened it.

My bet is the calipers are crooked or loose.

I checked the calipers and they aren't binding and are installed correctly. I guess it must be the master cylinder.
