Ok, I give. I mounted the 74lb 24V trolling motor on my Nitro. I connected the wires as follows:

1) Red wire to battery #1 positive.

2) Black wire to battery #2 negative.

3) 4 gauge jumper from battery #1 negative to battery #2 postive.

4) Orange wire was connected to nothing.

5) I bought a Marinco 12/24V 4 prong plug and wired it to the trolling motor wires as in the instructions for 24V only.

6) I did not move any wires in the 12/24V Marinco receptacle. Red wire was in A+, black was in A-, and orange was in B-. B+ had nothing in it.

7) plugged it in and nothing happened but trolling motor didn't work.

8) Decided receptacle wires needed to be switched so I moved the black wire from A- to B- . Plugged it in and BAM.....burnt up the plug and receptacle.

9) Hooked up the trolling motor to my neighbors 3 prong 24V receptacle and trolling motor worked fine.

10) Went back to Bass Pro and bought another Marinco 12/24V plug and receptacle. Bass Pro guy told me I had the wires to the batteries correct except in was suppose to have the orange plug grounded to something.

11) Went home and put the orange wire on the negative terminal that has the black wire connected to it.

12) Hooked receptacle to red A+, black A-, and orange B-. Plugged it in and BAM....blew another plug and receptacle.

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!! What am I doing wrong??? I think at this point I may take it to someone and pay them to do it along with the fish finder. Thoughts?!

Go get It fixed by the Pros's..>JR

Teri, how was the plug on the trolling motor wired? Just two wires, 1 in the A+ and 1 in the A- or did it have a 3 wire set up?

BF

Teri,

You need a digital volt meter. Check the wires before the plug. If the voltage reads negative you have the leads from the volt meter backwards. Its ok, but it will tell you which one is red and which one is black. Dont worry about the orange you dont need it (in a straight 24v system).

Now you know which wire is which color. Forget the letters on the plug, just make sure that the red goes to red and the black goes to black. It isnt that difficult but can become coinfusing.

Bruce, there were two wires into the plug. There was a 12V hole, 24v hole, & a negative hole. I used the 24V hole and the negative.

Mini, I am not sure which wires you are telling me I have backwards. The ones into the receptacle or the ones into the plug.

Teri,

If you have a 24 volt TM and your using a 12/24 volt plug, you might want to use a different plug. Here is a link to the 24 volt plug I use for my 24 volt only TM. There is a 6 gauge wire adapter needed if you have 6 gauge wire. The second is a kit for the trolling motor side and the boat side. The plugs are easy to install.

I have a spare set up at home I will look at, it sounds like there is a jumper in the 12/24 plug that is causing the short. Thats why it only frys when you plug it in?

BF

P.S not a related question, but whats the update on your eyes. I am thinking about lasik myself?

I am not sure which ones you have crossed either girl. Thats why you need a digital volt meter to determine which is pos and which is neg. Then you can connect them correctly to the recepticle, plug and trolling motor.

Also dont get a 12/24 plug, get a straight 24.

Mini

Ok, call me stupid (it's ok I deserve it) but the plugs I find online say they work from 12 to 36V. I don't really find one that is just 24V that has a matching receptacle.

Bruce, lasik was the best thing I ever did!!!!

That will work Teri. The 12/24 plug has a jumper in it to pick one or the other. You dont have to worry about that. Just get one that has two leads. One for positive one for negative.

Did you get the digital voltmeter?

Mini

Check the inside of the plug, 2 of the terminals have a jumper. it's between one positive and 1 negative so you can switch between 12 and 24 volts at the foot controller. I did the same thing on friday night. I left the jumper on the battery where I put it and switched the orange and red wire at the battery. My boat had 2 blacks a red, and an orange. I hope this helps.

Problem solved !!!! Bought a different plug & receptacle at West Marine. Tried to install, it only accepted up to 8 gauge wire. !@#$%^& Made another trip to Bass Pro & bought an adapter. Hooked it all up....nothing! !@#$% Checked the fuse and it was blown. Put a new one in and pushed the peddle....walla, it worked!! Yeah for me.

So, I have the battery trays and charger installed (thank you Bob G) and the trolling motor on.....next project...move the Lowrance x47 to the front and mount the new unit on the dash.

Thanks for all your help!!!

Glad it worked out for you. Best of luck on the rest... :)
