OK since my bird season has pretty much twindled down I have 1 last shot at a deer this weekend (no punn intended, but I hope so!). I'm hunting all but tomorrow afternoon. Anyone else hitting the woods? Anyone want to start a little pool for who gets the largest deer rack wise? The winner announces their favorite bait and everyone sends them one. Whataya say. We'll limit it to $10 per bait. No luckycrafts or CA Castaic baits at $35 a pop. I need some extra incentive to keep me in my stand when it's 12 degrees. LOL Have a safe hunt all, and don't forget the blaze at least on the way in and out.

Me too tomorrow afternoon. Dallas plays who? Detroit plays who? Redskins is one of them right?

Rob,

I'll be traveling to PA on Friday for their deer season opener (rifle) on Monday. I'm definitely in "fill the freezer" mode as this is my last hunt of the season. PA has a new 3 point antler restriction this year, so I'll be trying to fill the doe tags first. Hunter orange hat/vest is the law in PA so I have always worn it, even in VT for rifle season. Good luck and have a safe hunt.

Cowboys and Indians (Redskins) always on Turkey Day!! Then it's Absolute and tomato juice in the morning, Absolute and Orange juice in the afternoon, and Absolute and grapefruit juice in the evening. 3 squares!! (and then 2 days to recover) And for those who do not partake, forget the Absolute part.

Back to the woods for the next four days to get my buck or doe, if need be. I will get a chance to scout out some areas for birds at the same time. Have a Happy Thanksgiving Everyone. Jim

Work has kept me out of the woods for both archery and small game this year. I have off for nine days starting Saturday. I'm on my way to camp in McKean County PA. What's nice is that camp is in McKean county and if you walk out beyond the yard, you are in Potter County. I've got a doe tag for each county and plan to have them both filled. As for a buck, with the new antler restrictions, I'm not feeling lucky enough to place a bet. HOWEVER, starting next year in PA, the racks should be something to really brag about...

We really rough it at camp. We have sattelite TV, electric range and microwave, tap system, and we even have an oil furnace that kicks in if nobody is sober er, um, everybody is too tired to get up and stoke or add coal to the coal furnace. Really, we may drink but we stil do a lot of hunting... sober hunting.

For those of you that use FRS radios to hunt, eat your heart out. We use 5 watt UHF portable radios and have a base radio set up at camp. We talk about 5-6 miles accross the mountain.

We're leaving Saturday morning. All I have to do is get through Black Friday at the 9-1-1 Center.

Brian,

I'll be in Montour County on Monday for opening day. I have missed 7 opening days in the last 30 years due to work/school commitments. To me, opening day in PA is like Xmas and I try to be there every year. I think Gary Alt did an excellent job with the black bear program and will do the same with the deer. I'm all for the antler restrictions as we have lots of racked buck in our county anyways. Good luck and be safe!

Bob,

Good luck to you also. To me, Thanksgiving is just a warm up for "first day". At first, I wasn't so sure about Alt's plans. However, I'm willing to give it a shot. In twenty-six years of hunting, I have only shot one buck that wasn't a spike. That was a seven point in archery two years ago. So, if this is going to give me a better chance of getting a nice buck, I'm all for it...

Brian,

I have shot 11 bucks in PA and none were spikes. All were 5 pointers through 8 pointers except for a 1 horner that had 4 points. I don't pass up any bucks either. My success is VT is the opposite. The area that I hunt is predominately spikes regardless of the age of the deer. I have taken one 4 pointer and two spikes in VT.

I think Gary's plan will help out the areas with young small racked bucks and make some wallhangers in areas like the one that I hunt. I willing to give it two seasons before making an opinion on the program.

I already have my buck, and doe tags are sold out in my county so I leave saturday at 3:00 pm for Drummond Island to go snowshoe wabbit hunting thru monday. Hoping for no snow, but i'm probobly dreaming at this point. I was going to go crappie fishing this morning but it's hard staying on the fish in 30+ mph winds. Maybe I'll wwwiinterize the boat today. I hate to put it away cause I still gots minners in the fish tank in the barn.

Just got home from down state,.....filled to the gills with good chow!! Hunted friday afternoon from 2-530pm...saw 2 yearlings (this years fawns)...they were puny!!!..cute tho!!

We all saw each other at the same time...i had just re-adjusted my butt, so i was nice and comfy and i looked over in their direction and we all made eye contact,...they froze and then started doin' the old head bob and foot stomps and kept trying to make me flinch....i just watched and enjoyed their company...they finally relaxed and went back to eating....every once in awhile they'd look over at me to see if I'd move.....i just sat and watched'em...they finally slipped off into the thickest stuff around and I never saw them again, but they weren't any bigger than a small doberman....little tikes....never saw their DADDY!!!

Had a great weekend....hope everyone got home safe!!

I got my buck for the year (in my library) so I didn't feel the pressure to hunt real hard as I slept in my stand through most of friday and saturday. That alcohol (the night before) is not conducive to serious hunting.

Nice irregular!! That's a lot of height on the beams. Was it a So. GA buck? Looks like an 8. Any stickers?

Hey Mac, I got it around Valdosta. Dan is right. I think when I actually shot it, it was on the FL side of the fence. It's an 8 point. The odd side is almost flat when looked at from the right side, very different. It has a small sticker (3/4") near the right base, under the fur, so I don't count it. If it would have had an evenly matched right side, it would have about a 17" spread.
