Not catching any fish. It gets so frustrating going out for hours in the hot sun and not pull in any keepers. I need to learn how to fish from someone. Very Sad Robert

Well it's a simple problem with a simple solution... Don't leave home to "go fishing"...stop that now! Leave home to "go catching" and obviously you'll be "catching" instead of "fishing". And, you thought this was going to be tough to resolve. Sheeeesh. Simple.

I'm with you Nominal, i've done a LOT of fishing the last few months with no CATCHING!!!

Got a fishing report in the email from Rich this afternoon who was out with Jeanne on Lake Lanier (where i'm going on Friday) and it was DISMAL!! They caught 1 hybrid trolling!

So, that means MORE FISH for ME!!!

Robert, change something.

Lake Lanier and Lake Hartwell have been pretty weak for us this summer. Jeanne and I were both getting frustrated. We were studying, being patient, altering tactics, seeking local advice. All to no avail.

Last week, I said to her that we should try another body of water. We got up at 4am and headed down to West Point Lake (Lagrange, GA). We had one of our best days. We boated 9 keepers (that's a lot of us), missed or lost about a dozen more, had great topwater action all morning. It reinvigorated us.

Today, reality set back in when we tried Lanier and managed one fish (and that only by trolling). The wind was kicking hard, we ran about 20 miles in messy, 2' chop to get to new water. Couldn't find many fish, the fish we found were inactive, and it just plain stunk from a catching perspective.

It takes time to learn this sport. Overlap the steep learning curve with the fact that sometimes, a particular body of water is not producing well for even experienced anglers, and it's easy to get frustrated. You just have to keep trying and keep learning.

Next week, I am going to put the Nitro in the local park pond (about 10-15 acres) and have an electric only day. Average depth is about 3'. I've caught bass there from the shore and in a raft, want to see how I do with my entire arsenal available. Learning, learning, learning.

Some suggestions:

- Try some lures you've never used before, preferably asking around for the best producing lure for other locals

- Try a different body of water

- Troll some live bait while you are casting

- Target a different species (crappie, catfish)

Believe me when I say I feel your pain! Good luck! Hang in there!

Robert,

Sometimes it pays to do a 180 on you're approach. If you're trying to be subtle with an ultra-light rig, change-up and run them over with a fast moving crank-bait. Keep in mind that Bass get pissed off too!!! When they do they strike back!

Also, Pick-up as many presentations as you can. I always carry an ultra-light, baitcaster and a fly-rod (9 wt.). Sometimes the flyrod is the only reason I've boated fish because the presentation was so foreign to them. And for those who dont think you can land big bass on a fly rod, the record is a 155lb Tarpon in Costa Rica (Billy Pate.)

Lastly, fish, fish and then fish some more. 2 things will make you a better fisherman: Time on the water and line in the water!

Beside, catching fish isn't all there is to fishing. Like most, I'm sure you want to learn more. Each time out I either learn something about fishing or my partner so it's never a wasted trip out!

Rich is right! Hang in there!

Just remember that any day on the water that does not require a trip to the hospital is a good day on the water. Between the fixin and the fishing I have been trying lots of new stuff Thanks to you folks. I am in learning mode this year. Fishing a lake near the house that is tuff at best and down right slow most of the time. I know there are fish here I just have to figure it out the hard way. I put away the stuff I know can catch fish there and start pulling out all the other stuff in the box. I have been working on fishing a tube bait and so far it's a big zero so far and even though it's frustraiting it beats going to work.....

Bruce

Robert you're a good fisherman so don't let doubts get in your way. You might just need a change of tactics or technique or both.

Most people like to fish shallow water for bass year round. I prefer deeper water in the summer because the bass have a tendency to bunch up. Once they are found and you can get them to bite, you'll have a ball.

But if the conditions are right, I love to fish for shallow bass most of all. In the hottest days of summer some bass are still shallow. The just aren

Man T, where you been all this time. This fella's been on the money that last, I don't know how many posts.

Bobby boy, you got 2 choices. When subtle and finesse doesn't work, do just what Tom said. Go BIG and loud. Go for the reaction bite. Try burning a spinnerbait, or use what I call a "thumper". A spinnerbait that rattles the fillings out of your head. One with a single colorado big 'nuff to cook eggs on. On your plastics, go big too. Use big freak baits like brush hogs, or HUGE tubes. And don't be afraid to try the "off" colors right now. Try banana or bubblegum in a 10" worm and let it slowly sink next to the choked up weed mats. They way I see it, if you're not catching anything, then you have nothing to lose. When I get in those situations, YES it happens to me, I start diggin in the ole tackle bag for something they have most likely not seen. You might surprise yourself and discover a new productive mid-summer pattern. Good luck.

Oh, the other choice involves bleach and dynamite and is illegal in all states so far. I can e-mail it to you later. Best to try it LATE at night! LOL

Robert -

I tend to downsize as TM does.....

Fly rods with wooley buggers will bring fish in for me when nothing else will. BUT, going out to learn how to use a fly rod and the price you will have to pay for a decent set-up just ain't worth it unless you intend to use it quite a bit.

Downsizing my baits and really slowing down my presentation have become my standards in the summer. 4" worms, small cranks, rooster tails, roadrunners and senko's/stick-o's (just added to the arsenal this year) seem to work best for me.

I tend to keep a pretty constant retreive with momentary hesitations so that, if a fish is following, they'll have a choice of running into the bait or attacking.

On soft plastics, I've found that natural colors - like watermelon/red flake or shad - produce best for me.

Since I'm doing most of my fishing from shore this year, I spend a lot of time in shallower waters; casting to the deeper areas has not proven to be productive for me. I'll find a lay-down or crappie bed or just a shady area. I fish right in the underwater branches whenever possible. This is where the baitfish and insects are going to be hanging out. Yeah, I do hang up a lot - but it's worth it!

me!

Robert,

What you need is a HPL (high percentage lure) which may differ from region to region.

My HPL is a Rebel Crawdad.

My HPL here on Largemouths is a Baby 1 minus in Fire Tiger.

Jerkbait all the way. Both SM and LM can't resist when conditions are right. In the weeds, a senko or flippin tube. And you can never go wrong with the "thumper" spinnerbait chugged along on bottom.

Important point here:

An HPL usually sells for somewhere between $2.95-$4.95 but as my buddy once said "Here in the the boat, this baby goes for $29.95!"

I've been shutout myself, more than once. My confidence bait, bar none, is a 6" Zoom Trick Worm in pumpkinseed, with a little 'scent' on it (I use Kick-n-Bass). This is rigged TX style, with a pegged sinker, using a medium spinning outfit. I almost always catch something on it.

When that's not working, I got to the opposite end. Either a Larew Big Daddy, or a Zoom Monster worm, (both about 10-11") in length. Color - usually dark; june bug, black neon, or red bug.

Going out tomorrow, and will have all the usual standards tied on - with one addition. Like Da Bear discussed, I'm going to start pitching a JigNPig, as most are not using it at all right now.

Most of all, pick one of the strategies that you think you will like, and tie it on. Put the rest of the baits to bed. Concentrate on that one bait, until you start gaining confidence in it. I couldn't catch a thing on a soft plastic at the beginning of the year. Now, they are my confidence bait.

BTW, on Sat. evening the only thing I caught was a 3lb Mr. Wiskers - but it was something pulling on my line. Zoom, june bug 10" monster worm. Must have hit him right in the head!

Forgot. There is a 'Run and Gun' thread on the board. If you haven't, read it. Also use the link at the bottom of the message thread. Posted the same question on BFHP, and also got great tips there.

Tight Lines and Keep Em' Alive!

And Scott, if you "downsize" anymore, you won't BE here! LOL

That's why I go fishin' with Kym - she makes even me look big!

But..... Would you believe that this tiny, 5'2", 105# lady does 1,000 sit-ups a day! In several groups, but 1,000 none the less! She started it while she was in the Navy and hasn't stopped! Used to do 1,000 "boy" push-ups, too - but ONLY does about a hundred now.....

She kin whoop my tail in more than just fishin'!

Well thanks for the responses. I am going to Atlanta tonight and will be there till Sunday. When I get back, I will try some of these suggestions. Someone mentioned this before, but it would be helpful to have a lure and rigging page somewhere on this website, even if its just a few people showing pictures in their library. Have a great weekend. I'll try to log on somewhere while I'm in Atlanta. However, I won't be able to until Friday night. Robert

Ya know........ I once heard about an angler who was very successful using a plastic worm rigged with a bobber......

OK Scott just got back from Walmat and bought the Strike King Baby Buzz bait. I also picked up a few Rooster tails as folks have been talking about them as back up baits on Lanier in tough times. I've already been asked to keep my "catch" alive so the folks at the "meeting" i'm going to can see what live Bass look like! No pressure there!!!

OK Rob, do me a favor, fly down right now find me the fish and tell them to STAY till I get there in the morning!!!

Yeah, Rob..... 'n tell 'em to "Jump!" into the livewell while you're at it!

I'll ship ya my secret fish callin whistle. It looks suspiciously like a stick a dynamite, but that's just for looks.

Just DON'T try to board the plane with that thing Rob, heck I read yesterday where they took an 80 year old man away in handcuff's because the security idiots at the airport were concerned about the 2 crossed guns on his belt buckle (welded on so they could not be removed) he said something to the effect of "what am I gonna do shoot the plane down with these things" and off they took him and fined him too!

What a GREAT use of our tax dollars on completely incompetant GOVERMENT employees!!! OK, Off my soapbox back to your regularly scheduled fishing show with Rob LeMoy as Gomer, Mac as Otis and Rich as Sherrif Andy...

Man Trep, you're as bad as the local press with my name. Five little letters and nobody get's it right. LaMoy!!!!!! LOL It's french and means, one who wears outer underwear! Or was it, one who fishes too much? Can't remember.

Remember, Trep..... In French, "Le" is masculine while "La" is feminine!

Oh, see there YOU go again, steppin in it WAY over your short lil bald head! LOL

Trep in French means...one who looks like French Fry!!!

Gee wonder WHAT Scott means????? Lemme go check my french to redneck dictionary!

Rob -

"Le" and "La" in French mean "The" in English.

All of their nouns have "genders". Masculine or Feminine. There is no "Neuter" noun.

(Heck! You're making me go all the way back to High School - we're talking 35 years ago - to recall something I swore I shouldn't have to learn 'cuz I'd never use it! Where's Pierre when I need him?)

"The boy" is obviously masculine and would translate to "Le garcon".

"The house" is considered feminine and would translate to "la maison".

I think I got those right..... :^)

me!

yeah.........that's the ticket Robert! Speak French to them thar' Bass. It all goes back to the foreign presentation I was speaking of earlier!
