How exactly does a trailer braking system work?

Chris,
Most are on a surge brake system. You slow the truck down the bar pushes in on the brake cyl that is in the trailer frame. That pushes fluid to the brake calipers on the trailer and it slows the trailer down some to take a portion of the boat/trailer weight off of the towing vehicle brake system.
