Ok, I want to build myself a rod rack.

I know I can buy one cheaper at BPS, but I have all this stuff in the garage that I told the wife I would use (when I bought it).

Anyone got any good plans for a Rod Rack? Fly tying table? etc...??

Thanks!

I bet you could make it cheaper! I just paid $100 for two wood racks at BPS that hold 8 rods each. My father said I was crazy but I don't have the time to make one!

I don't like the ones at BPS. I have the circular one right now, and it doesn't work good. Put more than 6 rods on it, and the weight of the rods puts too much torque on the unit and the top 'spins'. The other thing I don't like is that the spacing between rods is too small. Won't work very well with most of my baitcasting reels. Same for the longer on that have two channels (facing each other).

I'm thinking of making one using pvc pipe, similar to what I've seen used in some of the BPS displays.

There are some projects for rod organizers in the Grab Bag section of the site. You probably ought to check those out.

Sim, You got any 2" PVC ridge pipe? Is the rod rack for in the garage or house? PVC pipe works great for in the garage.

I haven't decided where I would put it yet, if it turns out decent it will go in the house, otherwise it will probably be in the garage...

I do have some PVC pipe, but I kinda wanted a wood project or two.

Thanks!

Tex -

I think I have the same circular rack. Bought it at BPS last year for about 20 buxs. I just counted - I've got 17 rods in it right now! Yeah, it does take a little organizing to make sure that they're in the right order to squeeze that many in..... And, yeah, the top does turn..... I had to put rubber bands over the brackets that hold my ultra-lights because they are so thin that they kept slipping out..... But I only use it to store them out of the way and am not constantly taking them on and off. I was very happy with the way it works for the price!

I was actually thinking of going out and getting another to hold my "spare" rods! (Unless I can get Mini to take them as trade-ins on All Stars!)

me!

Scott,

If it was just me, then I wouldn't be all that concerned. But my wife works with the rack all the time and it's just a pain. Same problem as you have with the - it's too big or it's too small scenario (with the rod diameter).

I have had the same rod rack for about 10 years....mine is shot now, the top keep spinning and there is no wood left to hold the hardware to make it stop. I liked the fact you culd load the rack up w/o reels. I took them all off anyway to do annual maintainance durnig our hard water months here in the mitten (now slap your forehead).

You should store your rods as vertical as possible with no flex on the tip. Graphite isnt as bad as glass is but some rods will form a "hook" to them if you leave them too long angled against the wall. I guess horizontal would be ok as long as no pressure is on the upper half of the blank.
