Any of you guys in the north have wood basements? talked to a guy the other day about them and he said only a moron would build a house on top of one. just curious

NO I Don't, but I do work for Hershey in the corporate building built in the late 20's and theres alot of wood in the basement, that has yet to rot, not to mention the old tile roof is supported by wood planking that has not rotted either, depending on how old your house is, the wood can be a good thing, they don't make em like they used to.

I am a contractor in the north and we build alot of houses on wood foundations. They are dry, well insulated, and will not crack like concrete. The biggest thing is to cover the 3/4 inch treated plywood with a good 6 mill poly or rubber roofing membrane and good drainage around the foundation. Many have been in for years with no problems. I would not fear one, infact if I build a new house for myself, it will have a wood foundation.
