Why are the wheel bearings so hard to replace on the Nitro Trainlers? My dad spent a day and a half replacing them. Now hes not the best mechanically inclined but he has replaced wheel bearings for about 15 years now on all of his boat trailers and he has nwever come across this sort of problem....

Any input would be appreciated.

What problems did he have? The bearings are just like any other bearing i have ever seen from a removal/replacement standpoint. If your trailer has brakes it will make the job more complicated. its nt a nitro trailer thing its just the way it is.

He says there is a nut that has to go back on after the bearing is packed. Its not any of the lugs but a nut that is inside of the hub.

I wasnt there when he did them so i dont know where this nut is.

The nut is the bearing retaining nut. You have to preload it and install it with the washer so that the bearing is under the correct load after you pack them. Did he have problems with it? Stripped or what??

Travis,

It is probably a spindle nut and/or nut retainer. It is what holds it all together. Check the website below, there are good illustrations there.

Carlos he wound up by stripping the retaining nut yes. And when it happened it was on a Sunday so he could not find one because nobody was open but thats a differnt story....

Travis,

Now that is a mess......I stripped one and had to buy a new one one time. But was easy to get as it was a weekeday.....

on my pt185 trailer i tried to replace one of the wheel bearings. i found out that the inner bearing seal wasn't a 'standard' size so you couldn't buy the bearing kit from the store and replace it. the bearing itself was standard, but the two seals that came with the kit didn't fit properly. i ended up taking the part number out of my owners manual and taking the old seal to a local napa store and they got me the correct seal. the seal from napa was about $8-9 the same seal from bps was almost $20.
