What would you ask a marine biologist?

I am thinking of setting up an interview or roundtable of a few state marine biologists in MA, NH and possibly Maine, NY and VT in April.

What specific questions, as bass fisherman would you want to hear them discuss?

I will compile them into a list and possibly use them if I can set this up.

Any help would be appreciated. You can reply here or send them to my email address: [email protected]

Thanks, Bill, the Mad Kayaker

Ken, as in catch and immediate release? Thanks, Bill, the Mad Kayaker

Yes......may as well throw in catch and delayed release too.

Catch and release from twenty miles, or more, away on spawning bass.

Oh, and ask them if they know George Castanza?

when do you cut the line on a hook or lure in a fish? How long is too long to try and remove it before you cut it, or how deep?

Trep,

If it's in the gullet.....cut it.

And then get some better rods so you can feel the bite sooner. ;)

Why were the fish always biting better yesterday,,,,when I wasn't there ????????

Why do the fish bite the best,,,when I only have a little bit of time to fish ????????

Why do I always catch the "big one",,,,,when nobody else is there to see it ?????:D

Deep Fried or Iron skillet?

I'm with Trep how long do take to try and remove a deep hook, before cutting the hook and hopeing for the best?

Here's one Rob will like:

Do the stinkin' cormorants do anything 'good' for the ecosystem?

Yeah, the post did go downhill pretty quickly but the CIR question is a good one as was the hook location one. I will add those to the list.

Here are some rough ideas so far:

I. State of the Bass, other fish and aquatic life in each state

1. What is the trend for the fisheries - upward improvement? downward?

2. What is the average lifespan of bass?

3. What is the average size of smallmouth and largemouth in your state?

4. Do you believe there could still be 10lb. plus bass in your state?

5. What is the growth cycle (average weight per year)?

6. What is their primary forage in the state?

7. Are there any studies underway to track bass like they do in other states? (Michigan comes to mind)

II. Catching Bass

1. There are some fishermen who say that the pros don't really fish for big trophies because of the structure of the event. There are climatic zones within the water column and you need to focus on finding the specific zone. Do you agree? Talk about this.

2. How does a drop or rise in the barometric pressure really affect bass and other fish?

3. What is the ideal temperature that triggers the spawn here your state?

4. What is the impact on spawning if you catch a bedding bass and release it? Will it continue with the spawning process?

5. A study was done in Canada about a bass' home location and it's ability to travel back there once caught and released several miles from the home location. Do you know whether or not a bass will travel to it's home location or stay wherever it is released? Back to the spawn - does this have an impact on it travelling back?

6. If you catch a bass and it is hooked deep, should you cut the line and leave the hook? Will the hook eventually rust out? If the bass is bleeding, what are its chances of survival?

III. Vegetation and their environment

1. What are the major invasive species you are seeing in your state?

2. What is their impact on the fish population and the aquatic environment in large?

3. What is the impact of chemical treatments like fluoridine to control vegetation on the bass population?

IV. Peta and anglers

1. Ever since the Royal Society published a paper a few years back on nociceptors and the ability of trout to feel pain, there has been a raging debate over whether or not it is ethical or humane to catch fish for sport. At the heart of this is whether or not fish have the patways to consciously feel and process this in their brains. What do you think?

V. Other

1. ...

If anyone else has something they think would be good to ask, please let me know. I am going to try to reach out to the fisheries to see if I can chat with theirmarine biologists next month and figure out the best way to get a roundtable as well as one-on-one questions related to fisheries in their respective states.

Thanks again, Bill, the Mad Kayaker

SEINFELD!

George: I got about fifty-feet out and then suddenly the great beast

appeared before me. I tell ya he was ten stories high if he was a

foot. As if sensing my presence he gave out a big bellow. I said,

"Easy big fella!" And then as I watched him struggling I realized

something was obstructing his breathing. From where I was standing

I could see directly into the eye of the great fish!

Jerry: Mammal.

George: Whatever.

Kramer: Well, what did you do next?

George: Then from out of nowhere a huge title wave lifted, tossed like a

quark and I found myself on top of him face to face with the

blow-hole. I could barely see from all of the waves crashing down on

top of me but I knew something was there so I reached my hand and

pulled out the obstruction!

(George pulls out of the inside pocket a golf ball)

(Jerry and George just stare at Kramer)

Kramer: What is that a Titleist? A hole in one eh.

Jerry: Well the crowd most have gone wild!

George: Oh yes they did Jerry they were all over me. It was like Rocky 1.

Diane came up to me, threw her arms around me, and kissed me. We

both had tears streaming down our faces. I never saw anyone so

beautiful. It was at that moment I decided to tell her I was not a

marine biologist!

Jerry: Wow! What'd she say?

George: She told me to "Go to hell!" and I took the bus home.

when do you cut the line on a hook or lure in a fish? How long is too long to try and remove it before you cut it, or how deep?

Article on what to do with deep hooked fish. I always used to cut my line off short, but according to this read you should leave about 18" of line attached. I was also suprised at the slow dissolve rate of hooks.
