Since it's not open bass season yet, went to my Mother-in-Laws place to do a little "casting" practice, and figured if I hook a pike or two, cool. Got there around 1:00 yesterday afternoon, only had about half an hour, and it started to rain. Only took 3 poles down to the lake with me, one w/ carolina rigged ring worm, one w/ jerkbait, one with a watermelon tender tube. Grabbed the c-rig, reeled up the slack, and something felt "funny". Guess I shouldn't have rigged that one in the dark. Ran the line thru the side of the top guide instead of thru the opening. "@$#%&!". Put it down and grabbed the jerkbait. Cast, twitch twitch pause, twitch twitch SNAG! "&*^$!". Put it down, grabbed the spinning rod with the tube. Made 2 casts, caught a 14" Largemouth on the second. Third cast nothing. Fourth cast, drag, reel, drag, HAMMERED!! loosened the drag, and managed to coax in a 6# Largehead! That's the second time in 2 years I've caught the same "BIG MOMMA". Kissed her, and let her go. 19.75" long and 16" around. Scale don't work (gotta get me a new digital one), but using the length x girth x girth divided by 800 formula (seems to work), I get 6.32#! BTW, this was from shore! Who need's a boat. Well, I do, but that's beside the point!

Now you know why he married me .... for my mothers lake!! But he did forget to mention, that was my NEW pole he was using. At least he broke it in well

I know I'm marrying my next wife for the in-laws....LOL

Just kidding hunny. I love you even if you don't have parents with a cool lake house )

There is a reason bass season is not open.....

It damages the population to take spawning bass, especially in the northern climates....

If you are going "Pike" fishing, why dont you use a spoon?

JMHO

Because you can catch Pike on anything that you can for bass. I know Craig, and I am certain he was not targeting bass. Nothing wrong with casting practice for pike.

Craig is that a private pond? I dont think the state rules apply to private ponds anyway.

I agree that targeting bass out of season will damage the population, but I dont think this was the case.

Yes John. This is a private "lake"' and I've caught tons of pike right off the dock. Actually, I wasn't expecting to catch anything. Like I said, I only had 15-20 minutes, so I was just loosening up the old casting muscles. I've never caught bass from that spot this early in the season.

Craig

Sorry Criag,

Thats the problem with email today, you cannot gauge tone or inflection in the written word. From your post I took the message to mean you were targeting Bass by your title and use of quotes on casting..

I apologize and will not bass fish until June 30th...

( well maybe I should reconsider my punishment)
