Hey fella's, since I got my new 24 Tempast on my Nitro 189 Sport, when I hit 65MPH on the GPS, it really starts to walk pretty badly, and is hard to control. Should I try raising or owering the motor, or try and adjust? I've been recording speed of 67.43 but I can't hold it there long cuz I chicken out and back off the throttle.......any info appreciated......

Mike:eek:

It depends on water pressure and motor height now. I would learn to prevent the walk before it starts. There are a lot of good post out there describing it on the BassBoatCentral.com so I wont post it here.

I've seen walking catfish but never walking Nitros.

I don't know about that Mike but my Nitro RUNS!!! LOL

Chine walk is just a sign you're running good.

There are some excellent articles on causes and effects. www.kencook.com has a very good one.

Understand the cause, and you'll understand what to do. You have a rotating wheel (prop) spinning clockwise. You have a large object (hull) balancing on a small piece of fiberglass. The prop will always try to torque itself over to the right, the hull *wants* to go straight. Two opposing forces are at work.

First thing to understand, you do NOT drive out of a walk, you drive to prevent it from starting. Driving a high perf boat is a constant left turn, with small right adjustments.

Take your sled out, during the week, with minimal traffic, and with lots of room to manuver, get it up on plane, and as you trim up to speed be in a sweeping left turn. You'll feel the boat get up on it's pad, you'll feel the balance point as you drive against the prop torque. Small adjustments, think of riding a skateboard in a 40 mph cross wind.

If it starts to wobble, trim down and start over, don't try to fight it, you're too late. If you attempt to react to the boat, you're too late, you must make it react to your driving.

Best advice, find someone on the clue bus to spend a half hour on the water with you, it's easy to teach, difficult to describe.

Thanx Pat and everyone else!!!! I'll give it some time and try what Pat said......and again thanx, You guys are the best!!! I will say this based on what Pat said, when it actually starts to walk, thats when I'm outta control, so I got to work on preventing it........man thats scary:eek:

Ditto what pat said, when I was learning to drive my 750 I was all over the place, yes it is scary.I can't recall one time in the last 2 years that it has walked on me, that i know how to drive now a little better. Thanks to great info and good people on this board.:D

Fast is borderline "outta control" anyway:cool:

Remember...loose is fast:lol:

Hey MIke, I'm sure it's pretty scary. I've never been in a boat doing that. But hey look at it this way, at least you know you got plenty of motor on that bad boy. I wish learning to eliminate chine walking was one of my problems! 67gps...in a fish and ski? Dude you are turnin' and burnin'. I have got to convince my wife to power up to a 175!

NoCAL

Just like riding a bicycle, once you get the hang of it, it becomes actually difficult to make a boat wobble.

I've had plenty of people come in "uncontrollable" "setup all wrong" "you guys are idiots", and after a quick driving lesson on the water "sorry, it's perfect"

We aren't born with knowledge, it has to be aquired, this is just one of those things that our egos overload our brains. We want to equate a boat with our vehicles, "I can drive" even though we have no experience, and something MUST be wrong with this boat, because it sure can't be **ME**.

9 times out of 10, it's the indian, not the arrow.
