If anyone has any of the test materials, books etc for the USCG OUPV license, and wants to part with it, please e-mail me. It is outrageous. The schools basically admitted that it is overkill, and absolutley ridiculous for what I do. However, it is needed to be 100% legal. Oh and Mac, talking about pi$$ poor designs. To get my license, I have to have logged 360 days of vessel operation on BEFORE I can apply. Exactly HOW am I supposed to do that if I DON'T HAVE THE LICENSE YET???? LOL I was told by parties that will remain un-named, that they make it so you have to lie! What a joke. Anyhow, I have the test CD-rom. Basically, there are 4,000 questions and answers that I have to commit to memory. Why is irrelavent. Just need to rote memorize them all, and learn to plot courses offshore, with tonage, wind speed, rudder degrees, current etc. The license is only about $400, but the classes are a week (which I don't have) and about $3,000.00. So if anyone has any of the test prep materials, I would really appreciate copies.

Lake Champlain is considered a GREAT Lake! LOL It has commerce between 2 states and another country so it has USCG on it, and because of that, I need a "six pack". Absolutely unreal! I also have to tag my boat "PV" for public vessel near the registration so they can pull me over every God forsaken day on the lake and inspect me. And they wonder why people just cheat the system. They make is so damn hard to make a living legally! Once licensed by the USCG, I will be one of only 4 on the lake that I know of with a legal charter service, and I know of over 20. Most of which aren't even state (guide) licensed. So for those who book with a certed guide/capt, that's why you pay so much. We have HUGE overhead to cover that the bandits don't. Don't even get me going on my insurance. It's going up this year, because I'm covering the dog.

ahhaha...dontchya love it......all too often it seems the only people who truely get screwed in this country are the one's who play by the rules!!! ahahaha.....

Why do I hear the "Gilligan's Island" theme song...

Rob, I know someone who was looking into getting a license from the USCG and I will see how far they went with it and what they may have.

Mini

Well, if I want to go full time and be the premier outfitter on Champlain, I need to get this done. This is where the rubber meets the road. It's situations like this that seperate the pros from the wannabes. Nothing personal Mini, just for up here that is. I want to get a B&B or some lodges and staff of guides and run a 1st class set up year round, so I need the license to advertise in magazines and on line. What better way to make a living that doing what you love. I won't ever make $100k as an outfitter (maybe as a pro in tourneys) like I would in the corporate world, but when you come off the water after guiding, it's a good tired, and you can't wait to go to work in the morning. I want to share the lake and mountains around here with people. My other goal, actually Michelle and I both, is to have a set up for under priveleged kids from the city to come up and enjoy the area. Kids that would normally never get to go fishing except maybe off the pier in the harbor. Hook them up on some serious smallies or pike. Let them ride quarter horses around our ranch, and learn to build duck blinds and deer stands. But I need the funds to get it going and that will only come with a huge successful guide service. So the USCG license it is for me. I hope to have it wrapped up by June. Wish me luck, I will need it.

Rob,

I personally know one "former" guide who did get his CG License. And, if he could do it, I know you can.

Looks like the gov is here to help again....lol

Please fill out these forms in triplicate and mail all four copies ........

As they say "Give 'em Hell"

Are not these the guys who gave the captain of the Exon Valdez his license.....lol

LOL......no doubt,...Ol' Capt. Haselwood,..the USCG gave him his license,...but the Smirnov took it away!!

Question # 437: You are north bound approximately 12 miles off the coast in the long island sound when suddenly orange dye surfaces immediately ahead. This indicates....

A) a military submarine is about to surface

B) a nuclear warhead has been remote detonated under water

C) a gas leak has sprung from an offshore main

D) it is a dye used to locate the cooridnates for the helicopter to drop off the hooters girls onto Mini's rig at the predetermined drop off time.....

LOL WHO CARES? I'm guiding on Champlain, but Mini, I want those cooridinates!

I was going to say "B",..but they left out the part that said,.."and shortly thereafter, you will experience the Perfect Storm Big Wave scene"..ahahah

How many Captains does it take to pilot the Exxon Valdez?

One.....and a fifth!!

Good Luck Rob!!

Sounds like me last year after the meds they gave me at the E-room! LOL I was in a puddle of drool on my couch and my wife asked, "you ok?"...."nope" was all I could mutter before passing out for 12 hours. She had to really shake me to wake me up to guide the next morning! LOL And I wanted something that would allow me to function! That Dr is probably STILL laughing his arse off. Good thing I hadn't popped them and headed out to the water or he'd have a lawsuit on his hands.

Roger Brown down Lake George way has his OUPV. Give him a call. As far as documenting your hours, there are several ways to do it, from producing a log (ensure it has that "weathered" look)to personal references. I've toyed with getting my 600 ton liscence so I could run the Port Kent ferry.
