I just happened to pick up today's issue of the USA Today. I double checked, and the part I read is not on-line.

On page 13 of the Sports Section, they have a large splash about Bass fishing. Noting, among other things, the two championships being held this month.

Some of the interesting items, that they have, are really hillarious:

With 10.7 million fishermen angling for bass, it's the most popular freshwater species.

Don't think that is right. I believe bass fishing is about 3rd or 4th on the list.

It's the most popular type of fishing amoung women (19% of bass anglers are women).

Boy, I don't know about that one either.

The Equipment

Anglers use bait-casting rods and reels. MOst use 6 1/2 to 7 foot long rods and 10 to 50 pound test line. Some may use spinning tackle (same rod and length - ops!). Spinning tackle uses 8 to 12 pound test. Only artifical lures are used.

Here's the kicker. The above description of the equipment, is followed by a picture of a closed face spincast rod/reel.

When they describe the FLW Championship, they say the format is head-to-head competition over two days. On the 3rd day, the field is narrowed to 12 competitors. On the fourth day, these 12 compete (starting at zero), to determine the winner.

Boy, I bet the guys fishing the FLW Championship are going to be surprised.

Research by Joan Murphy, USA Today.

Sounds as if Joan, needs to go back to school to learn how to do proper research.

The numbers look about right to me. Bass by and far is the most popular freshwater fish to catch in the US.

Last time I saw the stats 17% of bass anglers are women.

Cant say anything about the picture.

The FLW Championship is wrong, the third day 24 anglers fish, 4th day 12 anglers and weights zero.

Bass TOURNAMENTS are the most popular tournaments by numbers. I'll bet that catfish anglers spend more manhours fishing than their bass counterparts. After all, trotlines are fishing even while the angler is sleeping. Bass on trotlines just ain't cool :)

TT I read the same article as you and about flipped when I saw the old Zebco 33 as a bait caster. Also it said the Classic was worth $200,000 this year. I though Calis bucked up and put up $500,000 (or is that for next year?) ?? Anyway they could have done alot better. Since I am in hotels ALOT I read it pretty frequently but it will never substitute Fox news or ESPN.

I saw a thing on the Discovery Channel on Bass Fishing one time that made me laugh too....but then so does reading Field & Stream in the doctors office.

Mini, you nailed it on the head buddy - those are the numbers I know as well... and yes, bass fishing is the most popular in America... Damn europians go for Carp...

Well, I stand corrected. I listed a link below to the last National census on Hunting/Fishing/Wildlife done by the US Game and Fish folks. Interesting stuff. Here's the breakdown they listed, and I put some % calculations in also.

Freshwater (less Great Lakes)

Black bass 10,708,000 24.61 %

Panfish 7,910,000 18.18 %

Trout 7,819,000 17.97 %

Catfish 7,517,000 17.27 %

Great Lakes

Perch 693,000 1.59 %

Black bass 589,000 1.35 %

Walleye, sauger 571,000 1.31 %

Salmon 516,000 1.19 %

Saltwater

Flatfish (flounder, halibut) 2,269,000 5.21

Red drum (redfish) 1,721,000 3.95

Striped bass 1,716,000 3.94

Sea trout 1,487,000 3.42

43,516,000 100.00

There were a number of other interesting items that cracked me up.

LOL!! Just last weekend, Tommy Sanders on ESPN remarked that bass angling ranked third - right behind panfish and catfish!

I think we need to invite Joan to a BPS Spring Spectacular!

Tex, you're simply not understanding the numbers:

Freshwater (less Great Lakes)

Black bass 10,708,000 24.61 %

Panfish 7,910,000 18.18 %

Trout 7,819,000 17.97 %

Catfish 7,517,000 17.27 %

Catfish and Trout are panfish. Therefore, they must be lumped together. It's only those darned black bass that can't make it to the pan :)
