Hey motor guys!

I went fishing today and messed up my trim/tilt.

My dad was trying to raise the motor from the switch on the motor in the back while I wasn't looking. I thought my switch on the front casting deck had been hit by my foot and stayed on. I tried to stop it and we subsequently were fighting each other up and down, up and down simultaneously for about eight to ten seconds when the trim motor just stopped! It has not moved since. Won't work at any station up or down, no noise at all except for a click. Motor is a 1994 Mercury 90 HP.

1. We could not find out how to manually raise the motor.Luckily it did not drag on the way home.

2. Is there a fuse and where is it located? Could this be the problem?

3. Did I fry the trim motor?

4. What do I do besides take it to the repair shop?

Thanks for any help!!

Tom

You might have burned out the trim relays. Pick one up from your dealer, and use it to replace one of the originals. If the motor trims up, but not down (or vice versa), that's the problem. You'll need to get a second trim relay to replace the other one that's burned out.

If it turns out it's something else, keep the trim relay you purchased as a spare. Someday, you just may need it.

Check the motor out by disconnecting the solid blue and green wires (no white stripe) inside the outboard from the relays (there could be some bayonet connectors before they leave the cowling) and using some jumper cables, jump a 12 battery to the blue and ground. Your motor should drive up independent of all switches. Blue is up, green is down.

If the motor doesn't work, it's fried. If it does work, then look at the relays, switches and fuses.

I should add here that the ground side of the battery should be connected to the green wire and positive to the blue wire. This should drive the motor up. If it already up, reverse the connections to drive it down.
