I will be taking my boat fronm upstate New York to Florida the end of november, my boat trailer is 8 foot 6 inches wide. Ive been told that some states you need a permit for anything over 8 foot wide limit. Question is does this apply to boat trailers? How do i found out what the limit is for the various states i will be travling through.

Thanks in advance for help you can pass on

Dave,

I trailered a 896 from Insianna to Virginia and had nothing special. You do not need anything special in Virginia. They classify their boat trailers by axles.

If you want more information, check the states that you will pass through, DMV web sites.

Don't sweat it. The states are not concerned with non-commercial trailers. I have trailered all over. Some states like WI don't even require a boat trailer have tags.

Here is a database of towing regulations for all states:

Funny thing is that my state (Maryland) says that 8' is the maximum width, but my boat trailer is wider by a couple of inches and there has never been a problem, plus the state registered it with no problem when I bought it. I doubt anyone would ever check unless you are super wide.

I, too, have trailered to Florida from Missouri (and back of course!) with no problems..... Just drive SAFELY!

HAHA JR,

I guess I was not awake enough, plus I was not wearing my glasses. Could not find them in the dark this morning when I woke up......

Down har in Florida the maximum width is 8'6" without a permit. The only place I would be concerned about trailering is the Keys. They are borderline trailer-Nazis down there.
