The back up lights on my old truck never worked so the electric defeat for the surge brake never got used. one of the things I was looking forward to with the new truck was not having to get out and use the manual by-pass. Evidently from not using the back up light defeat, it's either stuck or defective. I definatly have power on the blue wire on the harness, so power is going to the defeat mechinism. Any suggestions on where to go from here.

The lockout mechanism wire goes from the plug (I'm certain you're using a 5-prong on the truck, but just making sure) to the lockout solenoid which is inside the tongue. If you've got good ground and good pos going to it (ground is from the trailer), if it's not doing what it should, you've got a part to replace. However, I'd trace that wire to make sure it's got good connectivity and isn't grounding out before it gets to the solenoid.

I didn't look up what model boat, but if it's a Nitro (assumed), you're using UFP parts. I think it's ufpnet.com or ufpnet.net or something like that. You'll have to disconnect the brake line because the whole assembly will come out the front of the tongue. If you're lucky, you have a flexible rubber hose at the back of the tongue that you can disconnect there. If not, I just unscrewed all of the clips that hold the line to the trailer and left it connected at the back wheel and bent as needed to get it straight into the tongue. Take off the two snap rings on one side of the tongue, remove the pins (hammer in my case), pull the whole assembly out while holding the emergency cable tight (just tight, to keep the assembly together, not engaged). The solenoid will be the only thing with a wire going to it :).

Like Mike said you need to make sure you have good power and a good ground, on both the trailer and the truck. If you witer power the solenoid from a spare battery or the truck you should be able to feel it click if you touch it with your hand, sometimes you can hear it too. I also also ctrace the wire from the solonoid back up to the harness because sometimes the wire gets pinched and busted, it happened to me once. If you end up needing a new part the website for ufp is www.ufpnet.com, cell them and they can get you what you need.
