Teach an old dog new tricks???

I don't really consider myself old, but compared to those I will be sitting in class with I am. I go back to school for my degree starting tomorrow, and I gotta admit, it has me a little nervous. It was funny when I went to see my advisor on the top floor of the college. I had just gone from work so had on a typical suit and tie, and my overcoat. One of the guys working on that floor asked me, "Can I help you doctor?" LOL He thought I was a professor.....what complimentary styled kick in the teeth! LOL When I told him I was a student he looked dumbfounded. I can just imagine what my professors will think. I'm not THAT much older than the student body. Anyone else out there back in school? Any tips I should heed?

Steve, I'm certainly not saying I couldn't learn something there. But have heard what some people have come away with, and I just don't know if it would be a worth while investment for me as I do know a lot of what will be discussed. Now don't anyone use this to say I'm a know it all. That's NOT what I said, but I know many of the pros that do those seminars and I would rather fish with them to learn than to sit and write it down. Plus when I fish with them, I don't have to pay $200 or whatever it is plus a hotel. But they are definately good investments for anglers looking for an edge or to perfect certain techniques. I am giving a seminar at Wally world for their fishing weekend soon and if one of my sponsors has his way, another at the Sufferin show in March. Besides, I will get all the pro tips I can handle from Mac and Mini when I go to Detroit in March! LOL Mini will likely wear me out as he never sleeps!

Oh and Steve, the other reason for school is to get my marketing degree, which not coincidentally is very attractive to potential sponsors and employers should I make the jump to working in the fishing/boating industry. There is a method to my madness! Well.....most of it!

My education has been a long drawn out experience, driven by finances. Two years right out of highschool and a class here and there as I can afford it. (Still not there after 15 yrs!)



It is a difference of perspective. Many traditional students have an (for lack of a better word) "idealistic" view of the world. When I first went back, after a 4 or 5 year hiatus, I tried a couple day classes. I hated them. I got tired of hearing things like "Are we getting out of class early today?" "This isn't fair!" "Do we have to show up for all the classes". I found with night classes and an older student body I learned much more. Better questions were asked of the professor and I could pull from broader, more experienced individuals.

Just remember one thing. Quiting is not an option. Just keep telling yourself that and you'll be ok. I started my BA degree at the age most kids were graduating with theirs. Another degree at the age of thirty and a Masters at the age of 46. I went from "that older guy" to the big brother guy to "DAD" guy with my fellow classmates.

Guess I just have to get over that initial odd feeling. But I do remember being 19 and thinking 30 was old. NOW, ya know......30 ain't so bad, now 40, that's old! LOL Ask me again in another 10 years.

just get a backpack for your books and stuff and you'll fit right in. i took a couple college night classes also and had to come from work with my shirt and tie on too. it felt odd at first, but really isn't a big deal. you'll do fine. now tryin to find your way around the campus library, thats another subject all together .

I think I need to take a "sport" to graduate. They have fishing listed......LOL How funny would that be. Maybe I'll take golf and save myself the frustration.

Rob, I went to college at night, while working during the day. One of the best things about that experience was the folks in the class who worked during the day. They had deeper experience to draw from than the 18 year olds. As peers in the classroom, those people offered valuable input that made the class more interesting as well as a better learning environment. One of the best life experiences I've had.

Bassin Fool - I'll take you the other way!! One of my best partners in Lab when i was in college (right from Highschool) was a lady in her mid-30's comming back to ther degreee. talk about PARTYING!!!! MAN could she DRINK!!!

Hey I am in the same group...I been doin' it for 10 years (mostly at night) and still do not have a degree. After this semester I will only have 5 classes to take before I get my BA. I wander how many of you that are on the "ten year plan" walked during graduation? I dont think I will be the oldest at mine...I hope not!



Iam thinking about doing day classes next fall and working 2nd or 3rd shift. This should allow me to fish some during the week. Heck I have to make it fun.
