What are your opinions on Sunglasses?

Best brand?

Best lense color? (grey/amber/green...etc...)

The wife and I have Solar Bats now, with the Green and Grey lenses (you can swap them out).

We have been thinking about Amber lenses, but I am wondering if there is really something about the lense "color" that makes a difference, or is it the quality of the polarization that actually makes it? Are there any honest rules when one color is better to have than another? Is there a good all around color?

Read a little about the "Wraptors"... Anyone have these? Comments/opinions?

Tnanks all!

I don't know about "the quality of the polarization", but I do know for sure that the lens color makes a BIG difference. I use an amber (sort of brown) lens in full sunlight and go to a yellow for low light (overcast) conditions. I keep both of them hung on my neck and switch back and forth moving into and out of shade and clouds.

I went through sunglasses like socks trying to find a pair that was comfortable, versatile and effective. Two years ago I found the H30's by Tsunami and they are now the only shades I'll wear while fishing.

The deluxe set came with 5 different color lenses (including clear and yellow) that make them useful in all lighting conditions. Yellow and clear are awesome for early morning, low vis times.

The wraparound style is lightweight, comfortable and provides ample wind protection during long WOT runs.

The best part is the price. Frames, lenses, hard and soft storage case, strap and a hat for under $150.

As you can tell, I highly recommend these glasses. Inexpensive, comfortable, great optics and useful in almost all visibility situations.

I wear maui jim's of all the brands ive tried and ive tried a bunch nothing comes close to the polarization on these glasses. The layer the inside as well as the outside to cut glare coming from behind. It works plus the lenses are very clear and no distortion. I have two pair grey for bright light and bronze for overcast days. color does seem to make a difference. One other suggestion is get lexan lenses, real glass lenses can be a hazard unless they are saftey tempered, most arent. imagine getting hit on the lens buy a out of control jig and having the lens shatter into your eye. Believe me i know from experience that this isnt very fun.

ok a Question,

I do not wear contacts and have to buy glasses. I have not seen poliarized ones to buy that are prescription. Am I blind (pun intended) or did I just misss them, or are they a special order deal?

Carlos

Carlos, there is a brand made to fit over your prescription glasses called, oddly enough, Fit-Overs. Top quality lenses, too. One of our State Team wears 'em and swears by the quality.

I can "see" that this will be an interesting thread.

Most all brands will make glasses to your prescription. I looked at the website for the ones TOXIC mentioned and they will do a prescription lens also. You'll have to have a recent prescription to send them, most require one within the last year.

I use Strike King Denny Brauer series from Wally world. Only about $15 and if they get scratched or lost I replace them. I use amber 90% of the time and grey on extremely bright sunny days. I would not leave home without them. For sight fishing or even running shallow they are golden! Plus they serve as a windshield for your eyeball when running WOT and have saved my eyes from rogue bugs more than once. I would really like some Costa Del Mars though. Too prices for a lowly guide.

You can get polarized prescription sun glasses from your eye doctor. That's what I wear. I got mine real dark cause I don't like the glare. Plus it gives me the "look" in my fish pics!!!

Carlos, BPS has "fit over" or whatever they're called, I have a pair and think they work great, but my wife won't let me wear them when she's on the boat with me, (says I look like her elderly uncle! lol) Don't know the actual brand name but it's something like "Fit Overs" or something, I have them in the small size and they feel, and work great, Also I have a pair of prescription sunglasses that the Doc swears are polarized, but to be honest, they don't cut glare as well for me...... but check BPS Carlos....egMike

The only sunglasses I wear are Oakleys for fishing I wear a pair of twenties with the black polorized lens. I just wished they made polorized lens for the M-frame

I wear prescription lenses and bought a set of clip-ons at BPS. They work great and I can just pop them off when I don't need them. They don't work as well as Oakley's or Solar Bats, but for 15 bucks, what the hay...

I have tried almost all major brands with the exception of Maui Jim's and the new polarized Oakleys. The best for me are the Hobie Sightmasters lenses for seeing in the water on most days. If it is too bright out the copper lenses are what I wear.

I did have a great pair of Costa Del Mars that I liked for extreme sun, but they broke.

I always buy glass lenses as I seem to scratch plastic lenses way too easy. The nicets ones that I have tried were H2optics. Light, real light and no distortion.

If you are interested in Hobies, I know a guy here in Michigan that deals them out of his house and can get them pretty cheap.

I am looking at picking up a line of polarized sunglasses from Canada called SunDogs. I am negotiating a rep deal with them now. They sent me samples and I really like them, but havent tried them on the water yet....

I'll have to agree with Rob on this one also...

$10 or $15 at WallyWorld is enough to spend...In my younger days, I only bought Carerra's...the $100 glasses that would scratch and break just as easy as cheap-O's.

Unless the 'science' of how to polarize a lens changes from cheap glasses to expensive glasses (I highly doubt it---but I could be wrong, just ask my wife) I'm sticking with the cheapies...I no longer have to have a brand name on my shades. No pretty logo is gonna make this ugly mug look any better anyway!!! I had a $2 pair of sunglasses that I bought off a sale rack in a drugstore several years ago...I had those glasses for 3 years before I lost 'em...it was a sad day...

TGIF!!!

I had mine made at a glasses shop. I wear glasses instead of contacts (soon LASIK!) but I had these people make me a pair of stylin shades right off of the rack, with polarization. It wasn't expensive at all.................sa

there is a big difference. cheapies just have a coating and its not truely polorized real polorized lenses are aligned within the lens.

I have a pair of Costa Del Mar called sand something(?) that I like. I will need to get another pair as these are too dark on overcast days and you can't see your line when jigging.
