Hey Gang,

When Mike and I were at Champlain a few weeks ago, we were both hooking up pretty regularly. We were going 1 for 1 with several sets of doubles. The sun started getting hot and Mike put on some sun screen and being Italian like I am, I never burn so no sun screen required. After that I was hooking up at least 3 fish to his 1. Mike was blaming the sunscreen on his hands, but he was still using BANG Garlic on his grubs.

What do you guys think? Was it the sunscreen or do I just ROCK? LOL

While you may indeed rock,

I have had similar experiences in the past when I used any bug spray that contained "deet" (which is the overwhelming majority on the market). Especially if it was in any kind of "spray".

I solved that by switching to Avon's "Bug Gaurd" which you can now get with an SPF 30 sunscreen. It's bug stuff does not contain any form of deet and is extremely environment friendly.

Also, after you apply the sunscreen or handle anything that the fish might find offensive, just rub a little of that BANG (or Kick-n-bass as I use) on your hands to help cover over the nastys!

Tight lines!

You can save a lot of time and effort by just using Jack's Juice Garlic fish attractant spray. Spray it liberally all over yourself. I'm not sure if it keeps the bugs away, but it sure make people keep their distance. LOL

Geeeee...I don't have any problem with bug repellent/sunscreen. I just wipe off any residue and the baits are fine....no worse than cologne or after shave!!

Speaking of Avon SSS Bug Guard with sunscreen...I have a bunch in stock if anyone wants any for the rally (or any other time). Just email me. Those black flies on Champlain are nasty!

They've got black flies on Champlain? Guys, DEFINATELY bring the strongest insect repellant you can find.

The first time I went to Canada, I was told to bring 100% Deet because it was the only thing that would keep them off. On the way to where we were going, my buddy and I kept stopping every time we saw water to test the fishing. We kept looking for "black flies" but the only thing that bothered us were ll these tiny gnats..... When we got to the cabin, we asked the guy we were renting it from where all the flies were, that we had only seen gnats. "Oh! Dems der flies!" he told us..... The next day we were covered with welts that itched for a week!

a good wipe with a damp towel is a good idea no matter what you use. smokers seem to do just as good as anybody else. even though i would think it would make a difference. i had a bottle of "berkley erase" that i swore by. i don't know if they make it anymore. it was good for washing off lures also. some times a brillo pad will bring shine back to a favorite lure and the "erase" will get the soap off. thanks stan.

Marke, the deet as Worb says, is a massive deterent to fish. I always wash my hands thoroughly after applying it. I use biodegradeable hand soap and scrub it off. Then I apply the anisoil fish scent to may hands, rub it in well, then rinse it off as it is very greasy. Leaves my hands smelling mildly like Old Spice! LOL In any event, it works and I don't spook fish. You saw me pitching. I always grab the bait. I have notices if I don't go through that process, I get 1/4 the bites until I do. I'm convinced.
