Has anyone installed steering cables before? I have a TF170 with rack & pinion single cable. My local dealer says you have to pull the motor. That sounds a little far-fetched to me. It doesn't look that difficult. Any tips or suggestions?

Pulling motor depends on the turn coming from the transom outlet to the motor. Very likely he's correct.

It's not a huge deal, if you have a hoist.

If you're planning on keeping that rig a while, might consider installing hydraulic steering, much easier to replace than the cable.

If I disconnected the rack & pinion from the steering wheel first, wouldn't that allow me enough room to pull the steering rod away from the motor?

Bo,

It's the turn from inside the boat to the motor which will cause the issue.

Hey Bo i just replaced my steering this weekend. I couldnt make the turn on my nitro i had to pull off the motor i used a fork lift, but you most likely will hafta pull that motor. Total it took me about 2 hours.
