Guys, just got a quote for $625 for a new stator on my '95 115 Merc. Seems a little high to me or am I just out of tune on prices.

Sounds about what I paid for mine 2 years ago. Mine was for an '89 GT 150, but the stator and rectifier were just shy of $1,000 collectively.

Mo, my understanding is it's where all the juice starts for the ignition.

Real basic electric 101. A stator to my understanding is like a magneto. Its basically a coil that has magnets in the flywheel spinning around it. The magnets passing over the coil causes a electrical current to flow through the coil, This current is boosted by the secondary windings(of wires) to the higher voltages needed to jump a spark across a spark plug. This voltage is alternating current or AC. I believe A rectifier changes this AC to DC current. The windings(wires) are insulated to keep the current from arcing across the wires instead of flowing through the lenght of the winding. Should the insulation fail or broken connection or wire then you need a new stator(they can be rewound). The rectifier fails (can get to hot its usually hooked to and cooled by water from the water jacket of the engine)no DC current.

Theres a lot more to it than this but this is I BELIVE a basic look at it.

Have I lost you?

Nope. That 'splains it.

This is the way the outboard generates electricity to keep the spark plugs firing. Correct?

Mofish

and they keep the starting battery happy also. You remember pulling those ropes?

Nope. I would always let my fishing partner or my girlfriend pull it. Builds character.

Possibly a red stator kit being installed is the reason for the big cost, as opposed to the 182 for just the stator, but i will agree with bob, it shouldn't take much longer then a hr to for D&I on a stator.

Ah-ha! That explains it! It costs so much 'cuz it's brought into the USA by soviet arms smugglers!

thanks bob! It is nice to know that someone out there will not rip you off when you are in need. just went thru one of those dealer experiences with my truck whereas this particular dealer was really tryin to take advantage of me by the tune of $350. He was marking up the parts $150 over what the parts dept. quoted me and then charging me $200 labor on top of that for a 15 minute job (replacing O2 sensors). don't mind paying a little extra but this was really bad (i don't wear a bra, nor need one, and am not blond or a vegetarian). he said that was the best he could do and i said "see ya later". thanks again for your input to this board.
