Gang - Teri's post got me thinking, I remember not even a year ago I saw the price of 42" Plasma TV's hit the $900 mark, now they are all well over $1000 and are all (or mostly) HDTVs. I know congress passed the legistlation that in February 17, 2009 the "DTV Transition" will complete, with analog broadcast TV to stop. My question is since everything i've read has said ANY TV I have today will work with DTV as long as I purchase a DTV broadcast converter I don't have to replace anything (thats as long as Congress doesn't change it's mind again!!). Why don't I still see the standard LCD and Plasma sets on clearance??

I figure for a guy who is still impressed with his 32 inch TV and standard (non-progressive) DVD Player, I guess i'll wait 4-6 years to upgrade!

I was hoping the non-ED/HD flat planel sets would be super cheap by now.

I have one issue with alot of the new plasma/lcd/hd tv's flat panels. Why do almost all of them have to be wide screen? Wide screen is fine for movies shot that way but they don't handle tv broadcast so well. Next time you see a baseball game on a wide screen set watch the players get shorter then taller again as they run from first to second then on to third.I watched as one player rounded the bases after hitting one out and got shorter and fatter as he got to second then taller as he came to third then shorter and fatter as he approached home, a wierd scene.

Unless the broadcast is shot for wide screen format you have a bunch of players with itty bitty short legs. The samething happens to regular tv broadcast, everyone is squished down and widened out.

Hi Trep!

Here's the deal. The HD tvs, no matter when they were purchased, will be ready for 2009. Basically, your buying a 2009 tv years before it is mandatory. You are correct about your 32 inch tv needing the digital to analog converter when the switchover happens. All analog tvs will need the D/A converter. Understand that means that your picture quality will still be the same. The D/A converter is doing what it names implies. It is taking a digital signal and down converting it to an analog signal that your tv understands and can only produce. Also, your 32" tv won't be 32" anymore because the picture won't be modified anymore to "fit" standard tvs. If you watch dvds or watch anything shown in orginal 16:9 broadcast, you will see black bars on the top and bottom of your screen. Standard tvs are 4:3 ratio and must have the film/picture cropped in order to fit the screen. Your 32" tv will be more like a 24" tv after the conversion in 2009.

ED - Enhanced Definition tvs have to be the biggest waste of money there is. These are already obsolete. ED is 480p, which is the resolution of what a progessive DVD resolution is. So, this means the best picture quality this type of tv can deliver is DVD quality. Why would you spend $ on this when you can have true High Definition resolution which is 1080i or 720p? When the changeover is complete, almost all channels will be shown in HD resolution.

When it comes to HD, it's still hard to beat the picture of a rear projection HD tv. I have a 65" Mitsubishi and love it. I had it professionly ISF calibrated and if I had a dollar for every compliment I had on its picture, I would retire. I also have a 32" HD LCD. This one is in my bedroom on the wall. It also produces a great picture. LCDs and Plasmas are more about show than picture quality. People just think it's cool to have a tv that is very thin and can be mounted on a wall like a picture or painting.

I personally like the LCD much better than the Plasmas. Plasmas suffer from easy burn in, and are basically impossible to repair. If ONE of the many individual pixels burn out, it looks like there is a fly on the screen. That's too much crap to put up with when you spend thousands for something. LCDs also have a higher contract ratio, which produces a brighter picture.

If someone was looking at replacing the tv in their living room, I would highly recommend the DLP sets, prefererably a Mitsubishi. The DLP technology was invented by Texas Instruments. This picture is created by sending the picture to millions of tiny little mirrors (as opposed to one mirror in rear projection tvs) that produce a vibrant, detailed, crisp picture. You can definetly tell the difference when you are watching fast moving sports like football or Nascar. Colors or much more accurate and the reliability is far better.

Hope this helps.

Those are settings on the TV. Most people think they have to widen the picture which inturn changes the aspect ratio.....

Oh and go HD

LCD or DLP? LCD thinner waall mountable, DLP thicker not wall mountable and usually lighter.

I am looking at both.

Well, I know that when I have to get a new TV, I won't make a move without asking Rusty

and/or Mini.

Uncle Billy

Rusty, I need you! I just had a Sharp Aquos LCD delivered today and I have alot of questions. Not impressed with the picture out of the box. Went to avsforum.com and read alot of bad things about this set. Guessing I will return within the 30 days but I don't know what to return it for. I bought the LCD to reduce glare. My old rear projection had alot of glare. Are the newer DLP's better with that? I don't need to hang it on the wall so I thought maybe going the DLP route but worried about more maintenance, bulbs, etc. Any suggestions on what set to get for about $2500 (Sharp was a bit more than that). I would like to bug you with a few more questions but I will stop there.

Oh wait, my current DVD player is progressive scan but sends 480p. What do you need to do to convert to the 720p or even 1080p with DVD's. I know the Blu-Ray deal just came out. Is that the only player for HD output?

I am on the way..... Please stand by. I will have all the info you need.

Thanks Rusty!

Did I ever say how much I love this site? I can always count on you to provide expertise for everything....well, maybe not dating advice. :D

Okay, got what you needed. The reason why you have so much glare, is probably you have a protective screen that comes with the set. It is designed to increase the contrast, which it does, but causes a lot of glare. I removed my protective screen. I wouldn't recommend this step if you have small children or pets who like to paw at the screen.

Return the set you bought. I will not sugarcoat it for you....It is junk!

The set you want to buy is a Mitsubishi WD-57731. This is a 57 inch HD DLP set. This is a kick ass set. You will be amazed at the color and brightness that this set will deliver. It has tons of rave reviews! This set is more than the $2500 limit you gave me, however you can find it cheaper on line. I have found this set much cheaper online through nextag.com. I found this set delivered for as low as $2128.99!!!!!!!! I have bought my last two tv sets on line and have saved hundred of $!!! Here's an alternative if you are hesitant about buying online. BestBuy has this set right now for 10% off when you purchase online (you can pick it up at the store) for $2339.99!!!

As far as your DVD player is concerned.... I wouldn't do the blue ray thing. It isn't worth it at this point. You can buy a DVD player with the Fadrouja (spelling) chips that will up-convert all dvds to 1080i to your new tv that will make them look great!

Let me know if I can answer more questions!

PS-I can help you with dating too!:D

Mr. Rusty, explain to me why you dont like Plasma or LCD tv's? They were by far the best looking picture. I thought the Sharp Aquos and the Pioneer Elite plasma were the best picture I have ever seen but you pay out the bootie. Do you like the DLP's because they are cheaper?

What about the DLP maintenance? Bulb replacements every 5000 hours or so. At 250 a bulb, I would replace it 12 times ($3000) before my LCD went bad at about 60,000 hours. Just going by what I read. With all the tiny mirrors, can one go bad?

Just read the post you posted a few days back and read where Cass recommended the exact same set (Mitsubishi WD-57731).

Good luck!

Teri,

I do like LCD tvs, just not as much as DLPs. DLP has the best picture quality....Period. Pioneer Elite has the best picture quality of the Plasma market, but it is still a plasma. Stay away from Plasma. If money was no object, I would still say go with the DLP.

As far as the bulb replacement goes....replace it as you need to. Some extended warranties (maybe BestBuy) covers free bulb replacement. It may be worth it to buy the extended warranty.

Trust me, this is the set you want and will be happy with.

I am a little slow tonight.

250 hours a bulb isn't right. Even 250 days wouldn't be right. You shouldn't need to replace that bulb but maybe once every 2 years, and that with heavy use!

I guess I look pretty stupid for getting rid of my Mitsubishi 55" WS55807 but it took up half the living room. I will look at the set you recommended.

The Bulb replacement was every 5000 hours, which divided by 60000, is 12.

Cool stuff here in this thread, not my stuff, all of you folks stuff. We will all be going through this decision in the coming years. I walked through the tv section in a store tonight out of curiosity. I was standing there looking at the plasmas and LCD's side by side. They all looked good . Then I took one step forward and all of a sudden the plasmas didn't look good anymore. In that one step the angle of my view changed and every plasma screen was reflecting back all of the lights in the store. The lights were such a distraction I could not believe it. I mean "every" plasma had serious reflection on it's screen from the lights. I thought about the windows and sunlight at home along with the other lights in the rooms. I noted that not a single LCD had reflection on the screen. This will be a serious factor when we decide to upgrade. I would highly suggest anyone go to a store that is very well lighted and see the difference. Try a walmart just to see what the lights do to the screens. I noted that almost all tv stores and best buys have the sets in a dark room or one with minimal lighting. I could not believe the diference the lights had on the plasmas vs. the lcd's. WOW

Teri,

I look at tvs life span at about 10 years. Doesn't mean they will croke by then, just that's about the time most people replace their sets due to technology or whatever. Going by that, I would replace the bulb every two years if it is used a lot. That would equate to 4 bulbs you would have to purchase over the ten year span. The price of the bulbs will continue to go down.

On widescreen issue, this is cuz the HD is broadcast in widescreen, if you view HD on reagular format(4:3 standard) then you will have black bars on the top and bottom, and the widescreen format those lines are filled in and the picture is puuuuurfect. My flat panel lcd is awesome and I wouldn't trade it for the world, I have dish Networks 25 channel hd package, and I hardly ever watch regular tv anymore, most of the channels are commercial free too, which great except when drinkin beer, cuz you can't pause it, at least I can't I don't have a HDDVR

Anybody ever check out woot.com?

Trep, they have projection units on there all the time.

Right now there is a JVC 61 inch D-ILA HD TV for 1,589. I have no idea what a D-ILA

is, but sometimes they have pretty good deals. I have ordered some phones and such

off of there.

I have been studying the sets, although not as much as some people. I should be looking to buy around christmas and am leaning toward DLP. I have seen where there is talk of DLP sets with no pinwheels or bulbs, but instead using colored LED's to eliminate bulb replacement and moving parts. Anyone have information on that?

Trep man, the new lcd, plasmas, have a huge viewing angle, theres no issues there anymore, the rear projection type(which I have too, Hitachi Ultravision,51" HD) you have to be directly in front of it.

Velcro I had a guy here in pa tell me they have had problems with the DLP in the 2 year span, with dark spots on the screen cuz of those light malfunctioning, I got my 42 inch 1080P Westinghouse LCD from the va medical center tax free with the wall mount for 1699, Best buys price was 2100 plus tax
