Hey, Can you break away for dinner Sat. night? I'll be at the fairgrounds around 2:00 or 3:00 and staying till closing! KB

Have fun Tox, hope it goes well for you.

On a show related theme, took a quick run to the Outdoors show over in Rosemont, (near O'hare airport),and I'm walking along, and lo and behold, there's Jimmy Houston standing in front of a booth, people walking right by not noticing, waited a second while he signed a hat for one kid, and a baseball card type card for another, then asked him if he'd mind signing something for my son, he said "sure, how old's your son?" When I told him he's 7 he said, "well, then I'm sure he'd like this one", and signed a card showing Jimmy kneeling and of course, kissing a bass about to be released. I then asked if he'd mind signing my hat, and he again said "sure", smiling, and said it was the coolest looking hat he'd seen in a while. ( It's a white/green Gary Yamamoto custom baits hat). My son was thrilled to get the card, as he's a huge Houston fan, and I was very impressed that he took the time to actually look up, make eye contact, and he was extremely courteous and accomodating. Some guys I know around here had always said he wasn't the nicest guy in person, so either I got him on a good day, or these guys are wrong about him, either way, I was impressed. Thank you Jimmy Houston.

Sorry to get away from your topic a bit Tox, and hope you get some NTOWS folks showing up to see ya! All these fishing and outdoors shows are just what the doctor ordered for this dang cabin fever! egMike p.s.- noticed everything he signs he adds espn after his name.

I wouldn't put too much weight in an opinion that some of these guys are "not nice". Anybody who works shows, conventions, etc., knows what a grind they are and I don't care how "nice" of a guy you are they get to you sooner or later. Especially the headliners that go from show to show all the time. Exception to that rule....Woo Daves, I have never seen that man without a smile on his face and always takes time to talk or shake hands. He's like everybody's grandpa, LOL....

I have not had the pleasure of meeting Woo before, but he is my number 1 Fishing 'Personality' and all around good guy.

On the flip side, I saw Jimmy Houston last spring (BPS Spring Classic in Charlotte), really make some backhanded comments to a teenager who was getting his autograph. Kid was all smiles while getting his hat autographed, telling Jimmy about his biggest bass. The teen told him that they didn't have a scale on the boat, so they estimated his size before releasing him. Then Jimmy basically asked him, 'How do you know it was that big?. Probably a much smaller fish. I've heard too many of these fish stories.'

It looked like the teen had just been slapped. Just no reason to do something like that.

Tex, that's kind of the stuff I've heard from friends of mine about Houston, maybe I caught him on a good day then, he was extremely courteous to me and smilin' and even thanked me after of course I thanked him. So I'll just go by that memory. Never got the chance to meet Woo, (probably my all time favorite) although once about a year or so ago I got a real nice email from him after leaving a message at his site about the Woo's Clues video. "Everybody's Grandpa" really does seem to fit him well, and ya gotta like a guy (Woo)that walks like Fred Sanford.... egMike

The only 'pro' fisherman I ever met and got to speak with was Jimmy Houston at a sportsmans show at Notre Dame. It was almost the same scenerio as egmike had. My son was at home and a big Houston fan. I asked Jim for his autograph for my son, which he instantly gave me, all the time joking that the autograph was really for me and not my son.

that was about 10 years ago and my son stil has that signature with all his childhood treasures!

Jimmy Houston scored big with me and made another fan on that day!

Nice to hear, Mike L, maybe Jimmy Houston just likes Mikes? lol. My 7 year old son, much to his mom's displeasure, has quite a few pictures of himself "kissing" bass, crappies, etc, and just thinks Jimmy Houston's about the best thing going, if that's what it takes to get him/keep him interested in fishing and the outdoors, then that's fine by me. Have a good day all..... back to taking inventory and staring at tackle boxes.....
