Does anyone have a recomandation on a good, solid, but basic spinning reel that can be used for freshwater and inshore......?

Yep shimano stradic fh series(not the mg) would be a fine choice for both types of water. I own a few 2000 size older stradics that have seen both fresh and salt use and they have held up great, after 5 years they still work good as new. The new ones even have a little port fo you to oil them without having to take the whole reel apart. A nice feature for after a salt trip when you wash it with water to clean off the salt. i know they arent cheap but the stradic is a very durable and simple reel that will last forever if you take good care of it.

Wookiee, Try looking at the Penn 4200 or 4300 series of spinning reels. I think they're about $50.00 most anywhere.

I used the same Penn 722's for over twenty years. The only difference between the old 722 series and the new Penn's are skirted spools.

Shimano Spirex / Sahara. I've used them in salt as well as fresh water. Exceptional reels at $59.99 each.

The Sahara has instant anti-reverse. (Which I prefer.)

The Spirex has a bail trigger. (Which most people prefer.)

Get the Front Drag model; it's just easier to adjust while fighting fish. Really!

I like the Penn SS series. They are made for saltwater use so no worries there, and they come in sizes from ultralight to huge. Parts are also available if you ever need to make repairs.
