Well, I would like to first say thanks to Jim (bassinfool) and Dave for being what most guides would consider perfect clients. They weren't afraid to go in where the birds were, kept up with Zeke and I fine, and understood that a guide has NO control over the weather. Exactly what I feared most happened Saturday. Crusty clumpy frozen to everything snow. Couldn't get thru the woods, we were soaked by evening. The birds never came down out of the trees. The ones that did were off due to the 30 mph gusts of relentless wind. It was frigid all day and the birds did not cooperate at all. We only had 5 flushes and gave up in the afternoon so I could push a drive while they sat with rifles for deer. Still nothing. Yesterday brought warmer temps, a little less wind and as I predicted more birds. We had about 15 flushes and Jim nailed one that did a dive run at his head. By far the most pittiful weekend I have had for birds this season. But Jim and Dave took it in great stride. Sometimes it just doesn't pan out and this weekend was like that. We did see tons of deer tracks, and the bird action got pretty hot a few times in the afternoon. They were great guys and a ton of fun. I made sure to feed them well too compensate! LOL And Cody of course made friends with Dave immediately. The covers did not give the showing they're known for so I am headed to Jim's home woods in a few weeks to make it up to him. Hunt his land with a dog so he can see what it's like. It's time for Zeke and I to get out of here too, we are beginning to name the trees!!! LOL

Mine too Rob, I missed a 6 pointer at 75 - 80 yards though the hardwoods. 1st shot had tree or branches and the second shot I shot under him as I could see the bullet track in the snow under where the buck was standing. Hopefully he will stay in the area until I can get back out there on Wednesday. Talk to you later.

Rob.

I had a "rough one" also. My hunter/lawyer/partner and I had to tough it out with sunny fifty degree weather. Despite that handicap we managed to flush three coveys of bobwhites and more pheasants than anyone's see in a while. Shot a couple Iowa ditch parrots each and banged 12 bobwhites. Turned the rest of the flushes into Kodak moments. His wiemer caught a rabbit which we dressed out and practiced shooting its head with my 44 magnum.(PETA be dammed. Included in the festivities was me falling into a creek while trying to cross on a beaver dam made of cornstalks, then having a hen pheasant flush between my legs while putting on dry socks. Scott(partner) also fell into same creek after the plank I put down to cross broke with him in the middle. Then me falling into a muddy hole while extracting us from creekbed. Finally had to cram our muddy soggy bodies into his 03 Tahoe w/ leather seats. Oh we also put up about twenty deer w/ two being huge bucks.

Yesterday finally had some good weather w/cool and blowing snow only had two hours but managed two roosters and three quail.

Now for the real bad news. Schools out wed at noon and I'm gonna do it somemore. Now if I just could catch a six pound smallie I'd die a happy man(in fifty years)

Geez Fatrap,....sounds like you guys took "Jack" huntin' with ya too!!! ahahaha.....all the flushes were from the birds and deer standin' around pointin' amd laughin' at you two!! (There's a Toon in there somewhere!!) That hen pheasant must've scared the bajeezuz out of you!! LOL!!

We did have a great time, though a little sore from all the walking. It really was a tough weekend. Rob had some great areas where their should have been lots of grouse but as always like in fishing mother nature never cooperates. Koodos to his dog Zeke, he is one first class bird dog. The real pleasure in the trip was watching the dog work. OOOPS, I mean watching the dog run his master through the woods. Zeke has one heck of a great nose and to Rob's credit has been trained really well. Thanks again Rob for a great weekend, and look forward to you and Zeke coming up to are area to hunt. Jim
