Is anybody aware of any rod storage organizers that will fit the Targa 17 rod box. I put one in my old TX17 and now I'm spoiled with them. Hate fighting rods trying to get them out of the box. Found instructions to make my own at www.bassboatcentral.com/cheaprodholder. Think I will give it a try. Need to do something for my cabin fever.

Glen -

That was my first attempt to stave off the fever earlier this winter..... Built a rod organizer for my Nitro 2000 using cedar and golf bag tubes. Basically follwed the outlines by Rich Stern and John Foster in the "Grab Bag" section of this site.

At first, I tried using PVC tubing, but it was just too wide and not flexible enough. Ended up using the golf tubes available at WalMart for (I think) 39 cents each and they work perfectly!

Good Luck!

me!

P.S. Anybody got a use for twelve 4' sections of 1 1/2" PVC? :^)

Glenn I have a 2001 Targa 17, I think the golf tubes would work great if their was some way to hold the but end? For now I use rod socks and carry about 9 rods in the pass side rod box let me know how it turns out... thanks Tom

You use a second piece of board mounted at the rear of the rod locker to hold the butt end. Just cut holes in it but no tubes. See the pictures of the projects in the grab bag. On mine, since I used 1" cedar, I cut strips of velvet and glued them in to line the holes the butts rest in.

I found this link last fall and used the instructions for making a rod holder. I did it all while babysitting our two year old (he only fell out of the boat once!) in less than three hours. Without child, it could probably be done in an hour. Simple and cheap. Same principle as these others, but uses white cutting board instead of wood.

Mine's been in place on several trips and never had any problems with it.

For the rear of the locker, BPS sells a plastic organizer that holds 8 or 10 rods. I have it sitting in the back of my locker, and followed basically Rich's plan for the front of the locker - I used golf tubes AND 1 1/2 inch PVC (for the 7' spinning rods)

Hope this helps...

Yeah..... I guess I should explain that the open part of the rod lockers on my 20' boat are long enough that the larger guides near the base of spinning rods don't have to go into the tubes; so I don't need the larger diameter of the PVC.

Take a look at www.ospreyproducts.com they make custom fit rod holders. All you have to do is give them the measurements. I just received mine for my Avalanche.

Thanks for the help! Got some tubes ordered from TH Marine (http://www.thmarine.com/product.cfm?PRID=152) to use. They have them 43 and 60 inches long and 1.375", 1.700", and 2.250" diameter. They also sell caps for the tubes. Not as cheap as the golf tubes; about 2 bucks a tube. Just quit snowing here this evening. Got about an inch. How long till I can chase turkeys and eat some crappie fillets?

bassinfool,

how do they look? i checked out the website and they really look nice. they seemed a little high in price, but looks like you would get a great fit and ability to have it custom made for your particular boat.

You coulda kept that snow, Glen..... We're supposed to get it here in the St. Louis area today.

Got the tubes two days after I ordered them. Can't beat that! They're a bit roughed up but that won't show once I get them installed. The caps fit snug but I'm not sure if I really need them. Guess they'll keep the tips from sticking out and getting caught on the end of the tube. Noticed last night looking in the rod box of my Targa that it tapers down significantly towards the bow. Will have to order the small tubes (1.375") to put them side by side with the medium tubes (1.700") because of this taper. Can't get the large tube (2.250") in side by side next to the medium tube. Oh well, my five year old has four new toys now! Should be able to get four of the small tubes side by side with four of the medium tubes. Looks like winter is going to stick around long enough here in KC to give me plenty of time to get this thing built. I'd rather be rushed!!
