As folks know from earlier postings, I'm definitely respooling more than ever - I've had to respool all four of my "high-use" reels multiple times this season - and I'm not a tournament fisherman!! Probably a good sign that I'm out fishing more. One thing I've noticed, however, is that as I spool my lines, there is a certain amount of line that never sees the light of day off of the reel - usually the first 100 yards or so. So rather than using line that will degrade through the entire spool, is there some more durable backing line or other material that would work for spooling the first 100 yards or so before topping off with quality line? I know this is done quite a bit for fly fishing rigs (having two of those for when I really don't want to catch fish!), but have never heard of this for spin and baitcasting reels.
